There is only so far coaching goes, some of the mistakes stones was making was nothing to do with instructions given but rather issues with his mentality.

He got a lot of praise in one match for doing a Cruyff turn and the next thing we saw was him doing it every week when it clearly wasnt working anymore. Then he kept on playing himself in to trouble for the rest of the season. Instead of going simple he does unnecessarily go too complicated and then try to do too much. Hence why he did get dropped.

I think you are massively over exaggerating the amount of mistakes he made and personally I'd take the odd mistake as part of his development. Look at Pique or Ferdinand at his age. It's not like most of the CB's in the EPL weren't also making mistakes is it? Smalling, Mangala, Ottamendi, Cahill, Gabriel hell even Alderwiereld cost us a couple of goals at the business end.

What I saw was a young CB trying to get his head up at times and no one giving him options to receive the ball, which drives me fucking mad anywhere on the pitch, especially when it's a young kid. I think Martinez was a fucking coward for dropping him when it was his complete inability to organise and teach a team how to play without the ball that cost Everton (and Wigan before that) dearly, and Stones was scapegoated.

It's business that we couldn't do tomorrow even with a lottery win/bank robbery, so not much point worrying about it.

Just got to work hard and keep knitting together, and hope their 'good business' turns out to be a bunch of uncohesive prima dona galacticos...
Not worrying about it just stating that they're doing smart business for the first time in a while. They'll have an impressive team next season.

As for Stones, I don't rate him that highly yet but I think if he stays at Everton that Koeman could help him develop into a better defender.

It's not about money Utd can go 5 years without champions league and still be bigger than us and still attrack bigger players, we are small fry and have a small fry board. We could never b that big with this board

Momentum building for Pogba to United. Even the biggest optimist has to look at the landscape of the league and realize that pushing for top 4, let alone the title, is going to be a big ask. The betting markets currently City as significant title favorites, with United second at 4/1. With Pogba, I'm guessing that becomes 2/1. United also doesn't need to waste their first XI players in Europa this season, so with a week to prepare and a fresh first team, they and Chelsea should do really well.

On the subject of center backs, if I were Guardiola, I'd instruct the Txiki Begiristain to contact Levy and offer 30 million pounds for Vertonghen. He's a perfect ball playing left center back for Pep, as I believe Barca was even tracking him back when he was the manager there. Match him with Kompany and bring in Stones as an eventual Kompany replacement if you like. Money just doesn't matter anymore to the top clubs with all their television and commercial revenues. I think Levy would consider selling, as Vertonghen has only two years left on the deal and could easily double his wages. I'd hate selling him and think it would damage us, but if I were Pep and wanted to win now, he's their best option.

Good signing for them - but he's way overpriced IMO.
Doesn't matter what he cost. He will be lining up for them next season, which will make them stronger. Very good squad at Everton with money and a terrific manager

You say that like he's a household name.

Just googled him. Seems like an odd signing. I could understand if he was 17 or 18, but he's 21. Commercial reasons I presume.

It means no worries, for the rest of your days...

I think that's pretty harsh. Martinez is probably the worst coach for a young defender to develop under, his teams are so defensively poor collectively. He made the odd mistake but I remember Rio Ferdinand making similar mistakes as a young player.

I think Stones, with the right manager, and I don't agree Guardiola is a bad choice, he'll encourage Stones to play and his team will be set up to suit a CB that plays football (i.e. he will invariably have options, unlike when he brings the ball out for Everton or England and everyone's running away from him). I think he will develop into a very classy CB. And I think in a world of diminishing quality CB's I can understand him having a decent price on his head, although 50m is of course crazy, but English transfer prices get crazier every year.

A certain regal member of our back line had a few mistakes in him at Stones age too.

Stones is absolutely bollocks IMO. I can forgive the odd positional mistake from a young defender no problem, but the sort of mistakes Stones makes are ones you'd be annoyed at an 12 year old for making. Trying to beat players in his own box, attempting risky passes all over the place etc, real brainless stuff. I also think the idea that he's a cultured, ball-playing defender is pure emperor's new clothes - yeah, he's willing to try to pass the ball out from the back, but crucially he's not actually any good at it. He gives the ball away with poor passes all the time regardless of whether they are risky or pressurised passes, and he doesn't carry the ball into midfield effectively either.

The fact that so many top sides are interested in him suggests I must be completely wrong on this, far more knowledgable football men than me seem to rate him as a potential superstar...but from what I've seen of him over the past couple of years he's a liability.
