Scum heavily linked with verthongen (sp) this morning as they want to get their business done early. Looks like we might have missed out on him

We are heavily linked with a young defender too. I don't know if you know about him, a young lad named Steven Caulker. PLays for Swansea, PL experience, seems to tick all of the right boxes.

Signing another defender wont affect Caulker joining the first team. I personally think Nelsen and one of King/Gallas will leave in the summer anyway.

We may need one more but Caulker is going to be a huge addition.

idk how I feel about us signing an expensive defender, given that we basically need to purchase an entirely new strike force this summer. I guess we do need one more reliable defender though.

I agree with that, but do we need to go out and blow 10m on a CB, when we have one of our own to bring through, who already has PL experience?

It's a tough one, but I'd rather keep one of the oldies as an experienced head than spend loads of money for someone to either halt the progress of Caulker or be a bit part player themselves.

Kaboul, Caulker, hopefully Daws will be back with no long lasting damage, Gallas or King and Nelsen?

Not sure we do need anyone else. You shouldn't need more than four specialist centre backs, and we have lots of players who can play there in an emergency. The only reason we have had five centre-backs in recent years is because we have been carrying so many crocks.

If we bring in, say, Van Vertonghen, then, with Kaboul and Dawson also in their prime, Caulker is just not going to get sufficient game time, particularly if we keep one of King or Gallas.

Besides King and Gallas have been pretty damned good for us this season. They have been below par in some recent appearances, but King is carrying a knock and Gallas was rushed back; people are being a bit quick to right them off.

Kaboul and Dawson starting, with Caulker being phased in and King and Gallas being phased out sounds about right.

Vertonghen would be a great signing purely for the fact that he's young, and left footed. We don't have a left footed CB in the squad. A defensive four of Kaboul, Caulker, Vertonghen, and Dawson could be a group of centre backs that we retain for many years.

Move King (sorry you lovely lovely bastard but the glue factory awaits) Gallas and Bassong on. Bring back Caulker and sign Douglas.

4 very good CBs there, all with height.

With any luck this won't be relevant next season :sneaky:
Opinion on Douglas? I know he's sorta kinda a Dutchlander now but got any love for him? I've loiked the look of him for a few yrs now. Haven't seen much of Twente this season though.

We could actually afford his wages as well which makes him a better signing than Vertonghen in that respect.

I've not seen enough of Douglas to give an opinion Misfit, he sounds good from what i've heard. Could he play here and adapt?

I think so. He's not as cultured as Vertonghen but he isn't a clogger either. Quick enough and absolutely mahoosive. I mean, he'd make Eunace look like a wallflower. Vetonghen is the better CB and footballer, no disputing that but as a fall back option...

Certainly as one of a qurtet of CBs, would ease the pain of missing out on Vertonghen.

I agreed with you on Douglas before and I still do. The fact Newcastle scouts want him should be a huge hint that he is peek suited, they've been right a lot recently.

Jesus Christ. I hate the fact that his spawn is Alan Carr but this is talking out a contract on Graham Carr territory.

He'd cost about half as much as Vertonghen and about a 1/3 the wages. The difference in quality is less than the hype for mine. I'm beginning to remember why Newcastle annoyed the snot out of me for yrs before they were relegated.

IMO we need to bring in:

CF: Depending on Abebayor signing, possibly two of these. Don't think we should extend Saha's deal.
WG: Someone comfortable playing on both flanks, and capable of chippng in with goals, maybe more of a wide attaker than winger.
FB: Cover needed for both fullback roles, depdendent on Charlie and Naughton's futures.
GK: Young goalkeeper brought in to challenge Brad next year.

Possibly a young player to play in the hole as Rafa's deputy too...

VDV for 8 Million is better surely

Definitely one of the best in my eyes, but Kagawa is so young still and worth so much more than that - but I think Sahin got sold quite cheaply too didn't he?

I think the current Newcastle setup is working well and they are identifying players early and taking a few risks on them. They are definitely going down the route of taking risks on players who are at least athletically suited to the Premiership and then putting them into a decent team.

I don't think Verthongen is a special defender. Technically he is good on the ball but defensively he is just decent. Douglas would be dominant in the air (at both ends, which may be good for us), is big and strong, athletic and wouldn't come with such a huge price tag which would then allow us to improve other more key areas. CF, winger and GK have to be higher priorities considering at the end of this season we will have Kaboul, Dawson, King, Gallas, Nelsen, Caulker, Bassong and Khumalo still on our books. Some will go for sure but we have enough to not leave us short. Strikers on the other hand we will have Saha and Defoe only....
