Can we as fans get some assurances that they will actually show up to games and put in a collective effort? Yesterday looked like a bunch of union workers about to enter strike.

Everyone can have a bad day. We were undefeated until the City defeat.
They showed up and put an effort in a lot of more important games than Brighton away

Lewis Cook has impressed me again tonight, quick passing, forward thinking and incisive, can carry the ball at pace but also sturdy enough when necesssary. Looks like the player we want Winks to be.

If we're looking for an alternative to Kane - should he be injured or need a rest - we have two alternatives as I see it.

1) Bring in a top-flight player that can play out wide as well as in the centre (e.g. Martial, Bailey, etc).

or

2) Bring in a centre forward who will sit it out most of the time but will be a real target centre forward type.

I favour bringing in a multi-purpose, top-flight forward that can player both in the centre and out wide.

Bringing in a top-class centre forward as a back-up to Harry Kane is fraught with problems as this type of player would want to play on a regular basis. On the other hand, an injury-prone player who has a proven scoring record might work in our favour. Such a player would not be in high demand by clubs that want that player to participate regularly - but the player might relish the opportunity to be at a top-flight Club with Champions League games, etc knowing their own frailties. If this player is not playing regularly then the chance of injury is diminished - and when he does play then we can expect a more than competent performance.

Two players come to mind that might fit that scenario: Charlie Austin (Southampton) and Andy Carroll (West Ham).

Thoughts?

WARNING: All good with the players, but specifically 2 of our players wants strong assurances before commiting to a new contract, and Toby is not one of the players. Before people start wetting themselves, we have assured them. Poch has been given assurances in his contract relaxed talks.
I don't blame them. Players are entering their prime years - want to win, and be noticed.

And a great place for those players - at Tottenham Hotspur. Fabulous new stadium (and all the media attention that goes with it) and a winning team with a well-respected coach.

Matters could hardly be brighter at our Club...

It's rounding out to be a critical summer for Spurs. It's a very real, 'shit or get off the pot' moment for Levy and Co. We are on the precipice of greatness, but we need a couple of statements of intent to take the next step in our journey. If we flounder in the summer with our targets, it could have a profound effect and trigger a pause in our development. Poch won't feel backed. Key players who want assurances won't feel assured. Which in turn could start a minor exodus, bringing us back a few pegs. Something that would be a massive shame, given how far we've come over the last three or four years.

We do appear light on the homegrown front which further strengthens my opinion that we should look internally. Not everything can - or has to - be solved by transfers. This was something discussed in the academy thread and my thoughts.

One additional benefit of having a core of academy players is they save you £millions.

Nicky Butt: 387 games for Man Utd. Pretty mediocre spells at Birmingham, Newcastle and China to end his career.
Phil Neville: 386 games for Man Utd. Left to play for an upper mid-table Everton.
Wes Brown: 362 games for Man Utd and John O'Shea (393 games) went to Sunderland.
Darren Fletcher: 340 games for Man Utd. Most likely will be relegated. after switching WBA for Stoke.
Jonny Evans: 198 games for Man Utd. Is going to be relegated at WBA.
Tom Cleverley: 79 games for Man Utd and has been at three different mid-table clubs in the four years since.

None of these players were anything special. That showed in the standard of clubs they moved to after. But for a number of years they filled a purpose in the squad and surrounded by better, top class players like Van Nistelrooy, Giggs, Beckham, Keane, Scholes, Ronaldo, Rooney etc, their deficiencies weren't so glaring.

They were noticeable insofar that Nicky Butt wasn't going to ping balls around for fun like Scholes and Phil Neville was just a shit Gary Neville. But you can get by with these players while the mainstays of a football team are top class.

It's no surprise Evans and Cleverley were shipped out by Van Gaal when he had to rebuild a declining team. Ferguson won titles with those two, but that was with the likes of Vidic, Evra, Ferdinand, Rooney and Van Persie being at their peak. When they left, or went over the hill, those weaker squad players became worse players overnight.

So they leave after years of service and fetch you a profit. Ferguson spent a lot of money on first team stars. He broke the transfer record seven times. But when it came to squad players, he knew homegrown players can fill the gaps, and probably better than paying for a guy to warm the bench for a year or two who doesn't get the club, who doesn't acclimatize with the surroundings and who might not be better than the player he's blocking the path of.

Suppose John O'Shea came through at Bolton. Would he have looked good enough at that standard of team (lower half) for Ferguson to want to sign him? Probably not. But he came through at Utd, and was good enough to do a job at that standard (top) to make almost 400 games.

That sounds contradictory but it's actually quite simple. You can put Onomah in central midfield for Spurs and I believe he'll do better than at Villa. Better players, better football style. To use a past example, Ryan Mason wasn't really pulling up trees at his many loan moves, but he was given a chance by this manager, and actually for a while in 2014-15, he looked a class act.

Carroll, Austin or Jay Rodriguez...? Presumably £15m in transfer fee and wages on top just to sit the bench. Haven't we learned from Llorente and Janssen that the "back-up" striker doesn't actually get to play much. It's a waste of a squad place and someone like Kaziah Sterling or Reo Griffiths who have an affinity to the club and taught by Spurs coaches to play with Pochettino's ideals in mind can fill that vacancy when it needs. Saves us money and with the supply line of Eriksen, Alli, Lucas, Son, Lamela they will get chances to score if they get a chance to play.

assurance for what? signing of world class players, winning trophies or significant pay-rise?

Ideal window:
New contracts: Dele, Christian, Harry, Sonny, Dembele, Vertonghen, Dier, Coco

Out: Sissoko, Llorente, GKN, Toby(sadly), Trippier

Not gonna get into names on the incomings because the players I want are pipe dreams. So im just going to stick with positions. CB, CM, backup GK(unless Vorm stays), Striker, AM. Could do striker/AM if theres someone we can get but out of the budget for 2 more.

Hope Rose stays and we get him back to his best next season. At his best, he’s the best LB in the league. We need back there. I think Poch will be able to work his magic with Aurier whose been shaky his first season here. KWP promoted into the rotation.

Players like Sterling and Griffiths need to play regularly to develop. Sitting on the bench for extend periods won't help their development.

Just finished watching Atalanta game and once again I’m very impressed by Musa Barrow (Striker). He came on in the second half and scored after 2 minutes with a great composed finish.
He’s 19 and has played 7 times in the league this season, last game against Inter he was also impressive and is improving game by game
In 20 youth league + cup this season his scored 26 goals and assisted 7, that’s very good

He’s like a mixed Eto’o and Drogba. He’s very fast, good finisher, he make smart runs, is strong In the air and has the physicality. I really like him and hope our scouts are watching him. If he keeps progressing I think we should buy him next summer (not this)

How was Bryan Cristante? We’ve been linked with him quite heavily

Toby leaving looks to be really unfortunate after his performance yesterday. Easily our best player and so god damn calm under pressure. Even if Spurs get a potential superstar in, such as De ligt, you just can't replace the experience and composure that toby brings to the pitch. Absolutely devastated.

Imagine walker, toby, vert, rose - playing in the new stadium next year.

Media linking us with Gray at Leicester yet again today. We must see something in him but I’m not sure what as he doesn’t start regularly for Leicester.

Also kurazawa from PSG...because the last fullback we’ve bought from them has worked out so well! ?

I’d rather stick my meat and two veg in a wasp’s nest than see the club spend any money on those two.

I see we’re also getting linked with Pereira again, wonder if there’s any truth in this? Can play right or left back and right wing - very fast too.
