Ok so I watched Rennes vs Lyon last night to get a look at Ousmane Dembele.
The game was really good, open, end to end stuff. Dembele struggled to get into it in the first 10 mins or so because Rennes just couldn't deal with Lyon in the early exhanges. However, pretty much from his first proper touch he picked the ball up, flicked past one player and then burst up through the pitch on a 40/50 yard run before getting fouled on the edge of the box. He took the subsequent free kick forcing the Lyon keeper into a good save.
Whenever he get on the ball after that point you could see how quick and skillful he is and he was the only one for Rennes likely to have a major impact. The crowd were buzzing every time he got it and you can just tell he's a special talent. By all accounts there were some 20 or so scouts in attendance, including ourselves.
One thing to note is that Lyon have some awesome players too. Standout performances from Jordan Ferri, Sergi Darder, Rachid Ghezzal and Alex Lacazette. Umtiti is a class act at centre back too but I'm personally a huge fan of 19 year old left winger Maxwell Cornet. Lyon signed him in January of 2015 and he's only broken into the team since January this year. He's fast and skillful, much like Dembele, but bigger in the body and therefore far stronger. He collected a pass from Darder and burst down the left, skinning two players on the way and holding off a third before playing a composed square pass across the box for Ghezzal to tap-in for 1-0.
Lyon went 2-0 up after a cross from Ferri was headed in by Lacazette. Dembele's corner led to Rennes getting a goal back as he swung it to the back post for a tap-in by their centre half, Fallou. Then Dembele's saved shot landed at the feet of the Rennes left winger, Boga, who slotted home for it to finish 2-2. Overall Dembele was still able to have a massive impact for Rennes by getting 1 assist and effectively another with his shot leading to the equaliser.
In conclusion, I would be recommending making a move for Dembele now if I were the Spurs scout. In the same way that Dybala was lighting up Serie A last season and Juve snapped him up, Dembele is similarly brilliant and looks so confident at 18 years old that the risk involved would be low IMO. I would also be having a serious look at Ghezzal and Cornet from Lyon who are both superb. Lacazette on the other hand I'm starting to doubt. He's a very good player but he's not a natural finisher. Harry Kane is a natural finisher and I think Lacazette is more likely to have periods of struggle like he did in 1st half of the season. He'd also come at a very high price and I think we could find a more naturally gifted forward at a lower price.
