People are quick to dismiss these players because we should be aiming higher, and yet loic remy could have joined last year and people on here thought we should aim higher. The same could be said of Edson cavani or milito before that!

Maybe these are the chances we need to take

I don't think Pennant will become as good as Cavani though, mate.

a suprise signing would have to be like the VDV signing, comes out of no where and someone with the talent that improves the team and not just a back up or squad player

The dutch media seem pretty sure that he's going to newcastle

Would he want to come here, knowing that there will be 4 other guys who will be competing for a spot, and england international who is vice captain, a french international who was french u21 captain, the ex french captain and the club captain who is a club legend

The summer will probably be an excellent time for him to arrive. Gallas (certainly) and King (possibly) will be in their final year, so he can learn from them while he settles without them being any threat. Kaboul and Dawson provide excellent partners for him, and we know that that doesn't work as a partnership, so they're not direct threats either.

Personally:

- I've always liked Remy but didn't want us to sign him as our 'Adebayor signing'. Basically I thought a wide forward was a secondary priority to a #9.
- Cavani I was really keen for us to signin summer '10, much more than Suarez
- Milito I've never been impressed by. He had that one phenominal season for Inter, but has otherwise flattered to deceive

I really think Leandro, Remy and Vertonghen are exactly the type of players we need to be signing at this point in time - highly talented players in their early 20s, with decent international/european experience already. These are hopefully the next Modrics, Berbatovs, Sandros. Coming in next month they would strengthen our squad significantly and be great for the medium-to-long term, but won't disrupt our first 11/team spirit like a Kaka, Beckham or even Tevez 'ego' signing might.

They are though players with the potential to be key components of next season's title challenge, unlike the more 'Pienaar style' Hoiletts, Jarvis and Doyles that are being suggested.

Possibility of Remy and Leandro? :)

Those two + Ade and vdV would give us a strike force almost equal to City's IMO.

What do you think we're talking - £35m for the pair?

We could possibly recoup £25m from selling the players they'd be replacing - Pav, Defoe and Gio; even £30m if we ship Pienaar too.

I've gotta say Dan, I agree with your list. If we sign remy vertognen and Leandro thy would pretty much cover all bases

I would like a hoilett though, a player that I think could improve to any level

I sincerely hope that we can get Remy this season.
I wanted us to sign Loic Remy last year along with Demba Ba and Daniel Sturridge,if we had,we would be top of the league with that fire power and we wouldn't need to be worried about Modric moving in the summer.

A few years ago I would have been pleased with Pennant but not now,we have moved up a level above him.

We do need to buy players to kick on for the second half of the season and we also need a spending spree in the summer because our current squad isn't good enough to play PL and Champions League football next year.
I like Hoilett and he may come cheap in the summer,Dembele is also a pretty good player but for the money Fulham would want,we should look elsewhere.
I really can't think of that many players in the Premier league that would improve us and wouldn't cost an arm and a leg.
We are really going to have to search far and wide to get the type of players we need at prices we can afford.

Leandro Damiao and Loic Remy would be superb! Damiao has scored 40 times in 51 games this season and provided 10 assists! Sign him! Remy can be deployed as a wide forward if Lennon is out or give us something different to VdV. They'd both certainly compete for starting 11

A cb, to me, isn't a priority. Kaboul should be the first name in CB positions and then King (if fit) or Dawson/Gallas. Kaboul will be a mainstay from now on, or at least should be. If Vertonghen will be cheaper in the summer then wait til then

I know Remy was a RWF last season, but this season he's been leading the 4231 for Marseille, generally with Gonzalez behind him and Valbuena on the right.

Hoilett has played almost entirely on the left wing for Blackburn this season, though it's reputed that he can play across the field.

Assuming that they're covering/competing with Lennon, here's a stats comparison for this season:

SpKdt.jpg

(Age, Appearances, Goals, Assists, Goals per game, Assists per Game, Shots per Game, Key Passes per Game, Accurate Crosses per Game, Acc. Throughballs per Game, Average Passes per Game, Passing Success %, Tackles per Game, Interceptions per Game, Aerial Duels Won per Game, No. of Times Dispossessed per Game, No. of Turnovers per Game)

Stats of course must be taken in context, but the table suggests that Hoilett could be a useful buy, esp considering his low price. He loses the ball too easily since he holds on to it for too long, but contributes to defense and is fairly productive.

With better players around him, he could make more Key Passes - the one area where Lennon is far superior - unless his lowish number is due to a lack of intelligence/decision-making. Unfortunately I've heard that leveled at him many times, as he has a habit of dribbling blindly into alleyways; but coaching could make him more of team player.

The stats also suggest that Remy cannot cover Adebayor's role, because he doesn't touch the ball enough or link up play. (Adebayor has 37 passes per game, 1.9 key passes, and 0.4 assists per game - absolutely dwarfing Remy there.)

In fact the only striker mentioned who really matches Ade in passing stats is Marco Reus (41 PPG, 2.6 KP) but he is a distant dream.

Which Dede is that?

Madrid already have Varane in reserve.

Cant be bothered to read through the whole thread, so I wont know whether anybody has mentioned Jarvis or not, but this boy would be a perfect backup for the LW spot. Skills, speed and a good cross.
