If Carroll plays, I think we got fit in Kaboul just to match up against in the air like last time before he got sent off.

Defoe, Pienaar and Jenas can start if they prove in form in training.

And you know for a fact they're not performing in training do you?

Gomes
Kaboul Dawson Gallas Ekotto
Palacios Modric
Lennon VdV Bale
Defoe
Pienaar on the bench for this one, might be too soon, but good to have a quick alternative on the bench!

put pienaar straight in the middle with modric and play keep ball, no matter how physical the opposition if you keep the ball at pace and move it quickly and accuretly there is no problems, look at barcelona. Palacios for me is just playing to keep him in the shop window.

Are you Ardiles??!

Even Barca have a holding midfielder in Busquets. You're suggesting playing a team of attacking midfielders away?

Where do I say that?

I'm just saying that from what I've seen of the players, I'd prefer to start with Lennon, Palacios and Pav.

But if Defoe, Jenas or Pienaar show in training (which I can't see) that they're in top form, then I'd have no problems starting with them.

As long as Crouch doesn't start. He's been given far too many chances already.

Only one change from Sunday, Defoe for Crouch... Although I'd be tempted to go with Pienaar from the start as his work rate would be useful against the way Newcastle will play against us...

This one. I don't want Pav or Crouch starting. They are both only any use from the bench.

Would be tempted to start Stevie P, but as others have said, he needs to earn his spot first.

Here's an idea: VDV, Luka and Pineaar should emmulate Messi, Xavi and Iniesta. Of course, we have to keep two pacy wingers as well. Then, since strikers are misfiring, at least two of them should be playing. So it is 3+2+2=7. So, who cares about holding midfielder(s), we can do without one of the centrebacks as well. :)

I would be tempted too, Lennon has been erratic away from home for much of the season as much as I love the little fella. Given its Pienaar's first game he'll probably be on the bench but I would consider playing him on the right to give us a bit more bite and tenacity in midfield. Lennon could obviously come on to run at tired legas if that were the case.

For what it's worth, the officials team for the game is:

Ref: Mark Halsey
Lineo: Dean Mohareb
Lineo: Bob Pollock
4th: Kevin Wright

I don't know why so many are calling for Defoe. Actually I do, it's a knee jerk to Crouch getting unplayable balls for the most part in his last game.

Defoe away from home isn't ideal IMO. Harry needs to get strong and drop his favs.

People are saying Lennon or Pienaar, why not both?

--------------Gomes----------------
Hutton--Gallas--Dawson--Ekotto
Pienaar-Palacio---Modric---- Bale
--------Lennon----------------------

Watch Defoe score the winner...

This. So need to change anything major. 5 players there who are comfortable breaking. As somebody said, Pinnear replaces most knackered of the midfield 5 or so

You don't fancy Kaboul playing as a sweeper for this one then? :duh:

Gomes
Hutt, Daws, Willie, BAE
Lennon, Palacios, Modric, Bale
VdV
Defoe

Bench: Cudi, Corluka, Kaboul, Jenas, Pienaar, Crouch, Pav

Jenas could be useful as he'll be keen to play at St James, Pienaar on the bench as he's only just joined.
