You don't fancy Kaboul playing as a sweeper for this one then? :duh:

Do you think Kaboul is incapable of playing as a sweeper?

There are threads suggesting him as a striker, let alone someone who can defend when we are not in possession and push into midfield when we are.

He still can be a little chaotic as an out and out CD. I think he is absolutely perfect for a sweeper.

I'm just a little confused as to why most lineups have Defoe in them. Since he has scored about 3 or 4 Prem goals in 13 months.

I think barring injuries the team should be an easy pick:

Gomes, Hutton, Ekotto, Dawson, Gallas, Lennon, Bale, Palacios, Modric, VDV, Defoe

Im a massive Lennon fan but i would throw Pienaar straight into the side. I think we play to open away from home with 2 out and out wingers. Think it would actually give us a better balance away from home and we wouldnt be quite so open.

Gomes, Kaboul, Gallas, Dawson, Ekotto, Pienaar, Modric, Wilson, BALE, VDV, Defoe

Really looking forward to seeing Pienaar & Modric play together, think the 2 of them will keep the ball for fun! Pienaar is also a very good footballer in tight areas.

if your team cant keep the ball away at newcastle then theres something wrong, man city won there with a decent scoreline. Palacios has been offering us minimal defensive cover so i dont see why we cant play with an attacking midfeild.

I agree on the shape. I still don't think any of strikers deserve a place in the team. I wish HR would get stronger.

That's odd because in another thread you seem to suggest it's our midfield and players like Modric that are causing our strikers to look like steaming piles of horse shit.

Im not 100% certain but in his teams selections he has Kaboul in midfield and labels him a "Sweeper" but i always thought in football terms a "sweeper" played in behind the back four

I rate the midfield more than I do the strikers.

I'm not a fan of any of them. Before the season started, I said I would not shed a tear if all of them were sold and replaced with like for like cash wise.

Even if the strikers were putting away their usual 15 a season, I don't think they are what we need to take us forward.

My point is they are in danger of not meeting their usual average mundane goal totals.

That is why I think VDV is so great. He's actually started a move, and finished it himself. He does not wait for chances, he forges them from intelligence. We need another cerebral player or 2 up front.

Lets face it, Crouch, Pav and Defoe are pretty village.

You seem to be another person who thinks a sweeper plays where he does from CM formation icons (which if true would basically mean we will never have an offside trap):

Sweeper/Libero (SW)
Main article: Sweeper (association football)
The Sweeper or libero (Italian: free) is a more versatile type of centre back that, as the name suggests, "sweeps up" the ball if the opponent manages to breach the defensive line. Their position is rather more fluid than other defenders who mark their designated opponents. The sweeper's ability to read the game is even more vital than for a centre-back.[11] The catenaccio system of play, used in Italian football in the 1960s, notably employed a defensive libero.[12]

Many centre-backs have the ability to bring the ball out of defence and begin counter-attacks for their own teams, thanks to tactical (game reading, anticipation, positioning, tackling) and technical (passing, vision on the pitch) capabilities.

Former German captain Franz Beckenbauer is widely accepted as the inventor and one of the best players of the role.[13]

So basically just what i said. Stopping making a fool of yourself.

A sweeper plays in behind the back four, the word "free" you have highlighted refers to "free" as not really having any marking responsibilities and other normal defensive type duties.

A sweeper system was used most favourably by the Germans.

A physical player that would join the back four, sweep up the ball, and carry it forward.

Made famous by Beckenbaeur (for a limited time), Matthaus, and Sammer.
