As I said, we’ll make back the wages on any transfer fee. If it’s true that the fee now is close to £10m, on a decent contract he’d go for twice that even if he does nothing here.

If he 'does nothing' here, who is going to pay him 100k per week and how would we double our transfer outlay? Like I said earlier, we could end up spending 35m on a player we can't use. If he's fit it's a different matter altogether, but he's not and might never be the player he could have been. Don't see Levy sanctioning it at all. It's not some computer game.

He’s had a torn hamstring not a cruciate. It’s hardly a career ender. Even if he’s on 100k in a couple of years that will be below average for middling PL clubs. This is a classic Levyball signing.

If Chelsea want him now I imagine they'll just outbid us anyway.

In general there is very little reason a player would sign for us rather than Chelsea. We don't pay the fees or wages and don't seem to have the ambition to do what is necessary to push on.

It is Poch's over achievements as a coach that may attract players. We need to keep our CL place in order to take advantage of our larger stadium to compete with the teams around us.

Players like Barkley are the type we need to take a punt on to have a chance of keeping up with those around us, if we spent 10m on N'Koudou a few years ago, we should certainly spend the same on Barkley now in a more inflated transfer market.

That's what I'm getting at though. If Chelsea want him, I doubt we'll have a chance to get him at £10m. Chelsea can just bid more and have a clear run at him.

It’s an avulsed hamstring where is detached off its bony insertion. Very different injury. Very different recovery and he may never recreate 100% power in that hammy again.

Worrying ITK over the last few days. The stuff in the Alderweireld thread is particularly depressing, this Barkley and Zaha stuff is pretty much par for the course with us though isn’t it?

Very depressing, part of me wonders if over the next year or two this particular squad will break up. I guess if we can get vast sums of money we can replace but it’s not easy.

How? Not sure you can force a player to sign for another team.

Everton don't want him but they do want some money. We might not offer anything. Barkley, according to ITK is 'desperate to go to the WC' so he needs to play. If Chelsea are the only ones prepared to take a punt, and they can afford to much more than we can, they might be his only option. Everton might well tell him to go to Stamford Bridge or sit out the rest of his contract.
