enjoyed the game, though was so frustrating we were never picking up the loose balls, and on a couple of occasions Dembele being very frustrating with passing and loosing the ball in dangerous areas.

overall opinion of the match, = it's a lot easier to play faster when the opps don't come and put 11 men behind the ball

If we play like this, with this attitude, then we'll find our way back into the top 4.

I'm not going to thank AVB and the players because I never lost faith plus they get thousands of pounds a week anyway, I'd rather go out and thank street sweepers for the job they do.

I can't believe this thread. We gifted them two soft goals, and AVBs use of substitutes were shocking.

A poor Man Utd team, bar Rooney, was there for the taking today and we ballsed it up.

Just back from the game and was very pleased with the performance put in. Seemed like we played more forward passes today than we have all season and actually looked like scoring when we attacked.

Overall a much more positive performance from the lads, with hardly any of that backwards and sideways negative shit we've had to put up with for most of the season.

There was obviously instruction from AVB not to pass back if we could help it. You could see some of the players about to do it and then think "oh yeah..." and then change direction and move it forward.

Great to see. Need that on automatic.

We just needed to be patient, i understand that is not easy to do as a fan but it will come good.

Thats bollocks, the manager just needed to change his tactics and formation which is what most people have been saying for weeks now.

If you can't see all of the positives from that game, considering our mode of play so far, then...just wtf please???

Weirdo.

What I saw was a change from the choking, inverted winger system that had been nixing creativity from both wide and central positions. We got a little more space in the middle, and that's where we got joy today. The high press wasn't employed throughout the game today, also giving us space. Most of us wanted AVB to change a few things. He's slowly doing that. I'm happy he is. Young coach, it's going to happen! Next on the agenda, introduce the ball to Soldado. IMO, we needed creativity down the middle with Lamela linking with Soldado. Paulinho did fine IMO, but Lamela would have given us something else. Whoever we choose, we're going to both gain and lose some things.

I think people keep forgetting how damn close it all is, we're only 4 points off of 3rd still and 3 off of 4th (Liverpool, who we're still to play).

You're an optimistic one aren't you, @shelfboy68?

We played well today, deserved it muchore than they did. Could've easily capitulated like we did against City but the players came back with a healthy response. We were threatening until the end.

If it weren't for a shit pen decision and a lucky bounce off Walker's boot we'd have had 3 points today.

I haven't made any negative comments on here today regarding the game have I only doubt I have is top four as I reckon there are some better sides than us at the moment.
But I've not slagged anyone off on here today unless you can show me otherwise.

I think its time we stopped questioning everytime we have a bad couple of results, the media agenda is a disgrace and if not for anything else i'd love to see them all proved wrong.

No, you haven't, fair enough. I was just reacting to the disagree on my post and the optimistic on @parklane1, so I apologise for that.

I guess I'm just fed up with the response that some doom-mongering fans have had lately. I genuinely do believe that performances like the ones today, despite not getting all 3 points, will get us into that top 4. The players will have to believe it to achieve it and we must get behind them. It's close at the top and 1 bad game can change everything, not just for us.

If we go back to the same old shit against Fulham next week then perhaps you may be right.

It was a very good football game and a performance that matched very good opponents and denied them more than a handful of shooting opportunities - much more like the stingy Spurs of early this season, despite the 2 rather odd goals conceded.

But we really ought to acknowledge that the reason why we did certain things that we have not been doing, specifically getting behind the defence, putting in crosses and executing no less than three exciting and fast counter-attacks, was mainly due to the differing tactics adopted by our opponents.

Man United will let you play and still reckon they can beat you. Today they were proved a bit arrogant, because we arguably should have beaten them, but the key point here is what they don't do: they don't park 10 men behind the ball and they don't congest the area outside the penalty box and defy you to execute a through ball.

We were able to play some open football today because our opponents let us do it. And we still didn't win the match. That's not a major cause for upset, because Man Utd are still fucking good, even without Van Persie, but let's not attribute all of today's improvement and change of style to Spurs. There were gaps, for the first time in months, and we took them. Had we finished a bit better (Soldado's skied shot for 2-0 at the end of a counter-attack looms large in retrospect), we could have won that game quite easily.

The fans were immense in this game. Easily the loudest the Lane's been over the wires all season. Give yourself a hard fuckin pat on the back if you were present.

That having been said, Mike Dean is the absolute worst. Shocking that man gets paid to prance about a field with his rape whistle.

Good point! Great home support! (y)

That's bollocks, the manager just needed to change his tactics and formation which is what most people have been saying for weeks now.

But he didn't change our tactics at all. The players were able to execute counter-attacks and to move the ball better because we were playing opposition who did not come with a game-plan dedicated entirely to stopping us from playing and hitting us on the break. We played the same style, but there was more space, so more of our attacking moves ended near the goal.

Nevertheless, as usual, our two goals resulted from strikes taken outside the penalty box. Very little new there. And, despite having less possession that usual, we restricted the opposition to a very small number of shots and chances. Same as all season.

We do need to make changes to our tactics, but we scarcely did today. We were just playing a different type of opponent.
