They played with their youth team? Against our youth team?

Or are we to believe they played their first team today? And I thought another closed door match was tomorrow with the senior squads of both?

WindyCOYS said it was a 'Spurs select' side that played today, although Bentaleb referred to them as the under-21's in an instagram post earlier on his way to the game. Don't know which Rangers side it was though.

Think the first team are playing Southend tomorrow.

Speaking of training photos - I thought it was interesting that Josh Onomah was on the same team as the senior players (as opposed to Winks, CCV, Coulthirst...)

Why on earth is Fredericks going to the Scottish championship ffs. He's dropping down about 3 leagues in standard.

I know Mark Warburton is a good manager, but jesus fucking christ. It's not even the SPL.

The Rangers team included several players circa 22/23/24 years of age who were on trial there hoping to gain a contract, according to Scottish press.

So think its reasonable to assume the Rangers X1 was fringe first X1 players and u21's whereas Spurs was a development side which was u21's including some academy players - OS made reference to some of the new first year players beuing included (I'd guess off the bench). - such as Azzaoui who is 18 and will be an Academy Year 2 player next season who Ugo Ehiogu said was a star of the match scoring 2 goals. So not the strongest u21 side we could have fielded.

You are correct a Spurs X1 - possibly all the first team, but I think players like Coulthirst, Oduwa, Onomah will play a part - play Southend in another behind closed doors warm up game

When they said some first year scholar it sounds as if you believe it was last years first year scholars, whereas I assumed it was the new first years. Hope it's the latter, as I'd expect Azzaoui to play, but would be a nice surprise if some of the new first years did

Ah, I meant it as some of next seasons first years playing, OS said :

'later in the game there was a great opportunity for some of our new First Year Scholars to get some exposure to senior football'

The Rangers site posted this prior to yesterday's game.

"The match with Tottenham will be the first chance new manager Mark Warburton has to view his side in action, and he explained the format it will take.

He said: “We’ll play a coaching game where we’ll play three, 30 minute halves with three different elevens."

Word on COYS is Onomah only has 1 year left on his contract and we've only offered a paltry amount and he's not happy. Utd sniffing around etc

Anyone know anything about that?

@chelseayouth posted this on another forum i use and i assume a coys poster has picked up on it, bit worrying but i'd expect us to get it sorted.

I think the potential link up with Rangers is a good one, we do them a favour now by sending them some decent players to help them get promoted, in a few years time they could be CL regulars. Sending players then would give our youngsters valuable experience of EL/CL football.

Have to think long term here, it's better for us if Warburton stays at the helm at Rangers and does a good job there.

I fear we will lose talented youth players due to not paying competitive wages. It seem silly that a teenager is starting to demand big money before hardly having played a senior game. But when others like City and Chelsea are paying top money ...
In one way I like that we don't give them the world immediately, think it's wise not to make them feel like superstars before their career has even kicked off. Occasionally we'll probably pay the price of losing a great prospect. What worries me more though is that we might have a policy that we intend to keep our own products on lower wages than we'd pay comparable players that are bought in. Bentaleb finally signing on eased my worries a bit, but I still think we see the trend being there.

I think it's tricky. It seems that the rich/biv clubs are aware of how good our academy is. So they are letting us develop them to a high standard before offering them high money and trying to lure em away. Best thing we can do is give our highly rated ones a chance as soon as possible and show them it is not worth going elsewhere

Anyone watch the Germany v Holland lads yesterday on Eurosport? I watched it to see Werner who looked really quick, lively and astute, but there was a Dutch lad playing who bossed the second half but I can't remember his name. Van ...... somebody. Was impressed by him too. Anyone help me out?

It would be interesting what we offer Onomah in comparison to Alli because imo one is the better prospects and despite his first team appearances for MK dons, he is still a prospect imo, both players are at the same stage in their career imo

I think we have shown them with cebellos what happens when you refuse to sign a new contract. You are left in the dressing room for a year not even an u21 game.
We offer them decent wages as is shown by kane, mason, bentaleb, rose, townsend, winks all signing.
We need pritchard to put pen to paper.

Think we might have to look into the lenght of contracts as well, the very best prospects should be tied down for long term. Top teams will see an opening when it's only one year left on contract, sitting on a 5 year one it will look more difficult to poach.
Often youth are on short term contracts, as they are protected by compensation laws, but those compensations are usually low. It gives us a flexibility, and many must be on short term as we want to get rid when players aren't making the grade (most players to be fair). But I see no reason to hesitate when the talent is of the level of Onomah, Edwards, Pritchard, Azzaoui, Carter-Vickers etc. Those will make it if not for injury, at least to a level where we can sell them on, some will occasionally get an injury that will be expensive when he's on a 5 year contract, but I think we'll gain more financially than we'll lose if players are starting to get poached. I've been worried about Pritch's contract for a while, don't like Lazio snooping around, foreign clubs have it easier / cheaper to sign young players out of contract

Onomah has played 15 minutes professional football. Alli has played over 70 games. Yes it was league 1 but it was adults and he has proved what he can do. Have high hopes for onomah and think he will be as good as alli, but he has to prove it first.

It is a bit concerning, Onomah and Edwards seem to be 2 generations of the best player with the same issue. It seems crazy that we would spend all the money on developing a world class training facility and academy infrastructure only to see the players leave for the sake if 10 grand a week.

@IGSpur do you think it's going to be a huge problem going forward? There was news that west ham are paying Edwards British peers at a much higher rate... Hopefully we can stay fluid in terms of what we offer.

Would be horrible to produce a generation and see them all playing for different clubs.. Like west hams..

Lampard - Chelsea
Carrick - us/ Utd
Cole - Chelsea
Defoe - us
Ferdinand - Utd

Would hate that.
