One thing I've never got with the DRS, is why it's umpires call if it's just clipping the stumps.
If the umpires got it right or wrong shouldn't make any difference imo, if it's hitting the stumps it should be out.

Guys and gals I need your help here and where better to find some answers?

I'm a fairly recent convert to the lovely sport of cricket and I've watched every World Cup match so far, and I've got myself a membership for The Oval. I'm watching as much cricket as I can and I love it love it love it.

But...

My problem is getting my head around why some DRS and umpires decisions are based on whether the ball has pitched inside or outside the line. Some decisions are given out even if the ball has clearly pitched outside the line but has hit the pads, in the umpire's opinion on the way to hitting the stumps and I'm struggling to get the rules clear in my head.

Does the ball need to pitch inside the line or not?

I'd be very grateful for any clarification. Cheers.

.

You can’t be lbw if the ball pitches outside leg stump under any circumstances.
The ball can pitch outside the off stump and be lbw if it hits the pad in the line of the stumps and is going on to hit the wicket.
And to totally confuse things you can be given out if the ball hits the pad outside the line and is going to hit the wicket if the batsman is not playing a shot.
Hope that makes sense ? (especially the way I’ve explained it)

Yes that's great and many thanks to you and to Archibald + Crooks for excellent links to those BBC info sites. (y)

Thanks for that!
I must be honest it's something that still makes me doubt my intellect or lack thereof!

Just think of the offside rule in Football
and everything comes clear.
If the player with a piece of shaped wood in his hand
is not interfering with play
he shouldn't be on the pitch (Brian Clough)
especially in phase one.
or if the ball hits
the aforesaid shaped piece of wood.

Simples.

Anyone else suspicious of what's going on with Afghanistan? They sack their captain who got them to the world cup right before the start of the tournament. He'd been captain for four years.

They drop their batsman with the highest average, zarfran, then put him in at 8 or 9 when they recall him to the team.

They declare their best player, Shahzad, unfit for the whole world cup despite him saying he's fit to play.

And then yesterday, they're cruising (slight exaggeration but they were well on top) to victory against a Pakistan team who can't get the spin away and their newly appointed captain decides to bowl himself with 5 overs to go, bowling terrible midpace seamers and goes for 20 and they lose the game.

This is an Afghanistan side that beat the west indies by 7 wickets to qualify for the world cup. They're decent and they know how to win, especially on these kind of pitches.

This game stinks of fix to me . The captain bowls and goes for twenty runs and then the spinners get back control and then he puts himself back on when the best chance of a win was stay with spin. ...iffy to say the least .to say the most he threw the game.
if I was one of the other afghan players I would be giving their captain a wide berth.

Yeah, it's the same as England throwing the game against the same Pakistan team earlier in the tournament with Roy in the side ...

Good grief.

I concur you. Also spin bowlers overs were finished. His other seem bowler got injured in 2nd over. He has to bowl these overs.
He had spin in the bank, he just made a bad decision, the tin foil hat shit in cricket, no, just no.

Amazing what a pitch looking like a road can do for the confidence of a batsman.
