Finally got some play, and another failure for Compton. How much longer does he have...?
I'm glad our selectors put faith in players now unlike in the 90's when all it took was a duck to get binned, however, Compton is really starting to concern me.
I think he's flawed technically and I just don't see him as an opener who will "scare" the opposition, especially the Ozzies.
When/if KP comes back I'd like to think we could move Root up with Cpt Cook as I think Compton followed by Trott is to ponderous.

You know things aren't looking good when the beer snake is more impressive than England's batting.

Can someone explain to me why Bell gets picked to play for England? He has a great array of shots but a really poor temperament, he always has and always will. I hope Bairstow keeps his place when KP is back and we drop Bell

I was just having a similar debate at work and I couldn't agree more, when you look at his stats I think he averages over 45 but his conversion rate from 50-100 is about 50% which isn't good enough at this level once you get set.

He's playing well above his years isn't he, I know what I see in him but I won't say it as I don't want to temp fate!!!

Without tempting fate at all, Root clearly has a good test match temperament. He is watching the ball and playing shots on their merit. He is not doing the bell trick of getting over confident and getting himself out off balls that he should be letting go by.

What about Swanny though. 3 wickets in 7 balls! Let's hope England have a good batting spell again now.

I actually think cook didn't enforce just so Compton could get some more time in the middle, alas, I think he's got to go now. With kp coming back it was always going to be between him and bairstow and with root's recent performances Compton has batted himself out of the ashes.
Trott though, 11 off 60 odd, that was like watching boycott....

Scratching my head at some of Cook's decisions. Should have enforced the follow on, painfully slowly run rate on Sunday, batted too long today and then set up defensive fields when the opposition require over 450 runs. If tomorrow's weather was guaranteed to be okay then fine but the forecast isn't looking good. If the weather holds England will win but if it doesn't it will be a draw.

I think they wanted more to get everyone more time out in the middle batting, as there aren't any more chances before the Ashes. A lot of them are a bit below par recently and need a few runs, Cook and Trott both got decent knocks which will hopefully give them a bit of momentum and they are arguably our two most important batsmen.

Once he didn't enforce the follow on, he needed to bat until he did really. Like Trott says, you're 1 nil up in a 2 match series, you don't let weather dictate what you do.

There has already been more play today than most of the sceptics thought there would be.

I don't think he has because I don't see them slinging Root in for the Ashes opener, not when he's been excellent lower down the order. I personally would replace Compton there, but I can't see it happen.

I expected more from him in the home series. Bairstow is a similar player really.
