Just realised that you also need to factor in the extra overs they'd have been batting for. As we're seeing, there's no bowling them out cheaply, they'd probably be around 60-80 runs ahead, maybe for the loss of one or two more wickets. I think this boils down to the chance that we'd bowl them out, either way, we'd be needing weather, but I take on board the point made by @dvdhopeful

I just don't see it as a thing

I think someone also made the point as the fielding side you can control the pace of the game more. You can bet the Aussie’s would be taking their time to get through their overs on Sunday with us chasing down 200 quickly.

They wouldn't have opened up, they only need the draw, why would they?

Here's a rough estimate for you, providing my rough working out holds up ;)

Declare 90 minutes earlier means we'd have faced what? 18-20 overs less? Our innings lasted 107 overs so rewind to when Stokes was out at 437-5 in the 84th over, declare then, take roughly 160 runs off our total and the scores would be roughly level right now with 6 wickets in hand. They could afford to take their time. IMO there's no way that's a better scenario than what we have now.

All huge guesswork on my part, if we get a break in the weather I think we'll be glad of those extra runs.

I think the end of Day 2 was more of a problem for me. This passage of play:

351-4 61.1 overs (lead of 34)
384-4 72 overs (lead of 67)

This is 33 runs in 65 balls by two of the most devastating players against a tiring bowling attack.

The Bazball from the first Test would have been to push the lead over 100 on Day 2 and potentially be close to all out. Then have nearly all day yesterday bowling at the Aussies.

Stokes has done an incredible job as skipper thus far

Had we bowled, batted and fielded slightly better we’d be 3-0 up and there’d be no noise

You can’t beat the weather. It may rain for 2 days straight now or it might clear up and give us enough time to win this match

Shit happens but to pick apart the decisions of a skipper who has been nothing short of brilliant all series is just 24/7 sports channel/social media nonsense

I appreciate you doing some workings on a Saturday morning, you are a better man than I, too early for that mate!

I see both sides, not for a moment suggesting an earlier declaration would see us winning and far to many variables to know for sure but interesting to read both sides, right?

Is it just me ...... Or is tomorrow's forecast looking slightly better?

Absolutely this, it’s because of his aggressive captaincy that we are in this position of having a sniff. All we potentially need is 2/3 hours over the weekend.

Just to be clear, very clear, my quering the decision to bat on is in no way picking anything apart - Stokes/England have been stunning, I'm just chatting.

We can surely question certain things without being cast as 'moaners' or 'complainers'? Right? .... Right? I refuse to be categorised alongside Colonel Piss Flaps.

The reality is winning a game in 3 days is virtually impossible, especially as they scored 317. They've done immensely well to be in position that if we get a few windows over the next few days we can really have a good go but unfortunately the weather looks to have been unkind. It is what it is.

Looking increasingly likely we may get some play at some point today and possibly tomorrow PM 🤞

Can england lay claim to currently being the best side in the world?
Don’t think there is any doubt - a fit Stokes & Leach and we’d have murdered these convicts by now

The leadership from Stokes along with this unbelievably aggressive form of cricket has made them pretty unstoppable atm

The pressure put on the oppo when they keep going hard and then even harder is proving incredibly tough to face

We have done this against every side we have played now and all without 4 out and out injured fast bowlers. Almost evry call the selction team make seems to come off.

If Wood was able to play the first two this series would be done already in my opinion.

Inspection at 2pm. That seems like very slow progress. By the time that comes along the window for any play could have almost passed. If it passes the inspection I doubt we’ll have any play before 2:20.

I’m not optimistic.
