Did people here really expect us to lump 30m on a player, just because we are in the CL?!
I just don't get it. We are doing great as a club. We are stable, and we have a transfer system to keep us stable. The amount of risk/reward ratio in a player like this is much more favorable than a high profile player. We won't be buying a Lacazette, Mkhitaryan, Pjanic until we have the new stadium for a few years and can afford the wages they will command.
Ask yourself what's better, us paying a top player out the ass and hoping we get the CL we need to afford them....
OR
Trusting in our scouting system and our manager in bringing in the right players for our system.
Only one of those options is sustainable for us. We are not Chelsea, United or City. If we sign a high profile player, we would literally be dependent upon making the CL. That is tough and not guaranteed. We need to scout well and bring in players before they are highly rated. This is the way it is going to be for some time. Be happy with the football we have been seeing and back the players whom we bring in.
I agree but this doesn't really factor in the huge TV windfall everyone has received and is allowing clubs Crystal Palace to be bidding on guys like Batashuyi. The bar has been raised and whilst l like the way we are going aout our business and hopefully we have picked up a E30m player for E17m in Jansens and Wanyama is more than adequate cover for Dier, our business so far doesn't suggest we have picked up any of the top level match winners that I think we lack for a bargain price.
As such I think we will remain an effective, hard working side but I don't think we have changed the equation that led to us drawing so many games last year - unfortunately in the current market changing that dynamic will require spending £30-£40m on that kind of player
