In terms of player out/player in combos, I think that would be the most depressing switch in personnel since Dimitar Berbatov/Fraiser Campbell. Grealish is a totally meh player IMO and not fit to lace Harry Winks' boots, let alone Christian Eriksen's. God help us indeed if that was the thinking last summer.

I was thinking he might have been a 'long term' investment not immediate replacement for Eriksen, as he's only 23. But if @JJetset himself thinks thats laughable, (rated it funny) then maybe he was being considered for another reason... not sure what though, given that he plays as a fairly central ACM. Personally, I'm glad we didn't sign him. Or maybe the interest just wasn't real. Eriksen will be difficult to replace if he goes.

Isco and any Real player would see us as a step down.

The squads mentally it formed I think by having no players who feel they are doing us a favour.

Would rather have a striving player as Eriksen was when we signed him. Hope to god he doesn’t go though.

Agree with this. Makes me wonder why we didn't go in properly for Maddison.

If (ok, and when) Eriksen goes, we won’t get a like for like replacement. We’ll get a new, different attacking midfielder and tweak our game accordingly.

Like we always have done, which is how we got to this point with these World Class, highly coveted players.

Guess we thought we could get the vastly inferior Grealish for bugger all but that didn’t happen
Completely agree, Maddison is another class in terms on intellect to grealish! To think we were quoted 40mil for him!

Or perhaps Poch saw things in grealish's game that he felt he could develop more so than Madison. When you have a manager who's biggest strength is improving young players that must be taken into account.

I'm sorry if I'm being simple but when Hercules says "Isco’s family etc keep in touch with us via obvious means" it isn't obvious to me, can anyone enlighten me please?.

I think he means Christmas cards and the occasional joke meme via the Isco and Levy family WhatsApp group

Can’t have that Trix the experts on SC know better.

That's what I thought, just wasn't convinced he could do it.

I think it’s really easy to worry about what’s going to happen when players leave, especially given a: our experience of players going to other clubs and b: jj being on the money when he says we have players that are being noticed and would walk into any other team.

However to stave off the depression, I hold onto one piece of journalism I quite liked. I think it was on the guardians football weekly podcast after we played Leicester at the end of last season. They were talking about Spurs and the inevitable difficulties of keeping the side together and one of the journos mooted that he thought we wouldn’t win the league with the current squad but rather it’ll be what happens after we’ve lost a few that will push us on - it’s how we replace and develop. I guess an example would be Liverpool who have lost big names and still kicked on this year.

I would love to see this squad who have brought me much joy stay together but there’s a tiny bit of hope there that if the worst happens, we’ll still continue moving onwards and upwards.

Just look at Sissokko, it's akin to walking on water or feeding the 5000.
More than that; it defies all universal laws of logic. It’s alchemy and turd gilding. It makes Stonehenge look like a three year child’s bored efforts with Lego

Obviously we are concerned about losing players the ilk of Eriksen and Toby. It is almost impossible to replace them with like for like, but if we can recruit replacement players of reasonable quality, Poch will be able to improve them and / or devise plays to maximise their usefulness to the team. After all our current position in the league is more the sum of the parts than reliance an individual part.

Just think back when Dembele wasn't doing much for us as an attacking MF and Poch brilliantly turned him into a holding MF; Wanyama wasn't an awe inspiring buy and Poch turned him into a beast. And to cap it all, when we were so dismayed at having no replacement for the crocked up Dembele and Wanyama, Poch waves his magic wand again and Sissoko seems to be in a trance these days.

My take is be concerned but never lose hope when Poch is still with us.

Wanyama was a great player before he arrived. Sadly his injuries seem to have scuppered him severely.
I am really pleased we have seen such a upturn in Sissoko’s fortunes. The individual improvement in players is a template upon which the club must base it’s short and long term future beyond the tenure of Poch and his players.
