Am I the only one who really doesn't want Martinez?

Seeing him upset and having to explain a loss almost every week on MOTD doesn't help my confidence, despite that I obviously acknowledge he's done very well to even keep Wigan in the Premiership, but he's certainly not someone who I look at being able to take us to the 'next level' so to speak.

In all honesty I could see AVB being our next manager.

I really, really could.

I'd be happy with that, just a gut feeling the guy would be a right fit for our club. He was the hottest managerial property in the world when Roman parted with millions of roubles for him.

If Harry goes (and I still think it's a big if) then AVB is starting to look like one of the only real candidates. If we are looking for a new manager in the near future the field isn't exactly wide (is that the right phrase? Can fields be wide?)

If DL thought there was any chance of HR going (whether he walks or is pushed), i can't seem him sitting back and letting Rodgers go to LFC, unless he already has someone bigger and better lined up.

Wouldn't be overly keen. Comes across well but if it was between him and AVB, I'd chose the latter!

Yes, winning the Portuguese title with Porto was a truly remarkable achievement. Look where they ended up after he left.

Oh, hold on…

Um, think you need to re-read RJ's post and see my response again to see that the whole point was that DL apparently DOESN'T want the DoF model and thus Martinez or AVB would be possible.

I was just confirming to others. :(

If Harry goes and we end up with AVB and Pool have Rodgers someone needs their balls waxed!!

With regards to Porto, I heard an unbelievable stat:

Since 2003 Porto have received around €300m from sales of players!!

Well David Moyes is the firm favourite at the moment with the bookies at best price 7/4, Martinez 5/2 and then it's fair game for anyone else really.

Are you kidding me? He won the triple in his first and only year at Porto, including the Europa League, and were undefeated during the season in the league.

I don't think Harry will go unless he's so pissed that he's not getting an extension and even then why would he just leave and miss out on compensation.

I expect him to either get an extension to his contract or accept that he's one year left - which I think is far from ideal, that particular scenario.

Unless he really is interested in a job in the Middle East.

Remind me, just how many times have Porto won the titlle in the last 10 years? It's not like he did it with Braga, is it?

I can see Harry telling DL. "Back me, Let me bring in the players I want". Levy will never follow HR in his transfer madness. He won't agree to bring joe Cole, rio ferdinand and drogba. I genuinly think that the only way HR remain at the helm is a change in his overall methods.

Can we stop ruling out managers on the basis that they've never managed a 'big' club before please?

You have to judge each manager on whether he's done a good job within the circumstances he was under be that at Stevenage or at Barcelona. I personally wouldn't be comfortable with Martinez as I've question marks as to why they have to make a mad dash to the line every time. But, I don't know and you don't know whether he'd be good at Spurs or not. How are young managers meant to get a chance if they get ruled out cos they've 'only' managed the likes of Wigan

Disclaimer: I reserve the right to be against the appointment of any manager on the basis of the style of football they have previously favoured (see Benitez, Rafa and Lambert, Paul)

The thing is, you're kind of damned if you do or more if you don't on that one... Could one not say similar things of Pep Guardiola?! Don't all leap on me all at once for this, but Pep took over at the right time at Barcelona and won a league and European cup whilst having the most amazing players at his disposal in a league which is only ever won by one team or the other. Everyone here would say Pep is a great manager because he won trophies and... I agree, he does appear to be a very good manager.

Now, AVB... won the league, all the domestic cups AND the Europa cup (ok not quite Champions League, but still) and then was offered big money to go to Chelsea before he had the chance to do it again, he failed at Chelsea for reasons not entirely his fault.

Now, Martinez, keeps up a pretty woeful Wigan team and gets them to play some decent football, beat teams to stay up we lost to.

Who is the better man?! Pep, AVB or Martinez? Is Pep automatically the better manager because he has seen the top and knows what it takes to get there? Or is his philosophy only relevant if you have the super stars to back it up. Is AVB now a better manager for having been close to the top, failed at Chelsea and thus wiser to the EPL and what it takes. Or is Martinez a candidate for seemingly doing the impossible whilst still keeping a playing style that is pleasing to the eye, despite initially that same style dumping his team in the mire in the first place??

We all love a winner don't we, 99.9% of people here would say out of those 3, pick Pep. I for one am also guilty of singing from the Mourinho hymn sheet, but he has done it at every club he has gone to, so for me he is still the best.

But, back to my point I am trying not to make a hash of... Do we believe that any of these men (or ignore Pep if you think there is no chance) DO NOT have the skills to take us forward?!

Harry is surely the best evidence we have recently of a manager recognised for keeping teams up (generally), winning the odd trophy, working to a budget. Comes to Spurs and we get CL football.

You all cry that it's mainly DL doing the signings with the blessing or input of the manager, so would you be worried about the players Martinez might bring in? Why, DL does the signings...

Myself I can't decide... I still want Mourinho, my wife still wants me to buy her an Aston Martin, neither are ever going to happen, but the issue here is do we really know whether any of these candidates or other couldn't take us forward, or are we just wanting a flavour of the month manager over a supposed failure?

Don't flame, just wanting to spark some debate... and err, maybe this is in the wrong forum, sorry mods, the ITK talk and discussions this morning just seem very manager centric and I kinda went off on one.

Happy Friday everyone.
