Maybe we aren't expecting to keep Woodgate and Bassong... also Gallas is 34 in August. He can't go on forever, if we can get Cahill now then why not?
Woody has been released and will possibly resurface at Leeds, while Bassong has said he wants to leave.

Cahill is not as good as the hype suggests. But football does not just exist in extremes - he isn't either really good or really bad. Just because he is slightly overrated does not mean he isn't a very good player. IMO could prove a good signing if we do get him.

Walker I think sadly is going to be one of those players if he plays and has a few bad games and when he's costing us goals everyone will turn on him and it will be another promising career down the drain.

I think hes mega overrated because he's good going forward the same way Glen Johnson is and the same way Gael clichy was! would happily keep him as cover for right back but wouldnt start him yet don't think he's ready to be a starting rb for a prem team.

Also there's talk among Chelsea fans of trying to swap lamplard for luka!

Heard Jake livermore is being let go?

Vid of cahill

Good vid... obviously these can be miss leading shows composure and determination as well as decent passing ... better than bassong in imho... Gallas wont play as much this year not sure why we gave him 2 years...

we could possibly have over 50 games next season. is dawson, gallas, kaboul enough. king situation was disaster last season so another center back will be a shrewd signing in the least. woody is gone and bassong is obviously for the off.. we need serious competition at center back. im all for new defender signing. gallas is not getting any younger. dawson at times can look a right plonker.. not seen enough of cahill to say he is to class but he is a good player and cant have enough of those

The way i see it with cahill is that it is kind of a double win. Firstly we get a very decent, young english CB with bags of potential and a good injury record and secondly it means Arsenal don't solve their CB crisis. WIN WIN!

Is there ever a right time to throw a youngster in at the deep end? He's done well on loan at Villa and has been England under 21's only outstanding performer in the Euro's.

Hopefully Bostock will get a bit more game time (not a lot mind you) but we may see what he's made of/if he has what's needed to cut it in the prem?

Agree.

Walker will be a decent winger IMO.

Definitely not a defender though, at least not for 5 or 6 years.

Livermore is out of contract. We may renew and then sell him?

If we are trying to sign Cahill I would wager we will not still be in talks with Woodgate

But both Bassong and Kaboul are rumoured to be possibly moving on (Wolves and Marseille respectively, and both to Bolton). Cahill would be more a replacement for one or both of those I would have thought.

I don't really understand when Kaboul is gonna get a chance. King and Gallas might not be fit for the whole season but i'm guessing when fit that they will be first choice. I can't see Cahill, Kaboul and Dawson being happy to not play regularly until those two retire.

Walker has little defensive positional awareness, the people who rave about him, have probably only seen him on MOTD and not actually watched him in a whole game. Huge holes in his game defensively. He's a convert to right back from a striker not too long ago and it's quite clear in his game.

He is not ready to be first choice right back, but I'd have him in the squad and playing occasionally.

Next season will be Gallas' last. King might play 20 games. Woodgate maybe more if his groin problem is finally cured as reported.

I guess the problem is that none of them are of the calibre to challenge the old guard. It's why I'd rather we didn't sign another solid CB for the sake of it now and went for someone properly special (Subotic) next summer.

THIS.

From watching him play for the u21s I see that his pace gets him out of trouble alot of the time. I do think though he has definitely got potential to improve massively defensively. Hopefully a season of coaching at tottenham will bring him on leaps and bounds.

Although I agree the lad needs to work on his defending, I would hardly say he has huge holes in his game. A lot of his defensive problems were caused from playing behind Downing for Villa.

The lad is a very good prospect and I can definently see him becoming our first choice RB in the later part of next season if the coaches can work with him like they have Bale.
