It almost feels like Illeramendi or another Stambouli stop gap. I can't see Southampton allowing us to sign Wanyama at this stage of the window.

Personally, I will be pretty pissed off if we can't get someone in CM to improve the first team as we should have known it was a crucial signing all summer (far more crucial than the Wimmer signing for instance). Having said that, at this stage I'd rather no one than another Stambouli style signing who we'll be trying to flog in a years time.
Personally I think we were pretty clear on who we wanted and it was only the unexpected possibility of signing the Madrid player whose name I can't spell (fuck it, i'm calling him "Ian") that threw a spanner into the works and thus created the illusion of indecision. I think it's entirely possible that if Ian decides to go elsewhere, whoever we do get will be someone from that original list.

I think final back-up plan will be accepting the Rabiot 'loan no option' deal from PSG, rather than buying another Stambouli.

I'm hopeful for Illeramendi 'loan with a (more watertight than Sotons') option' though

I agree to that. I don't think we are dead certain on not signing Rabiot on loan. I just think that if that's meant to be, we'll give in in the twelfth hour. And that's fine by me.

The Wimmer signing does not mean a DM would have be signed any quicker. My feeling is that Wimmer should be ahead of Verts in the starting line up.

PSG are fairly organised in their transfer dealings though (one in, one out), and Rabiot sees quite a bit of game time. They're not going to let him go last minute without a replacement and leave themselves light in midfield, and they don't have a suitable youngster they could promote from within.

If he decided to go somewhere else with one day of the window left then it's surely impossible to complete the chain which ends with us getting a top class DM, since his club then have to replace him etc. I'm no sage on these matters, but imo we need Illarramendi to make his decision in the next couple of days to give us the time we need to complete plan B if required.

Well JJ has been persistent and consistent with his optimism on bringing two in and that we would be happy with our incomings. Therefore, I don't see the need in anybody getting vexed.

I wonder if the third player is someone who may have unexpectedly become available or has been realised due to our difficult start.

IIIRC didn't Jasper say all long a WF, CF and DM? Or was that prior to N'Jie signing. (It's hard to keep up)

I still think we have someone lined up that no one has mentioned at all.
My feelings too. There may be a couple on our DM list who we move for should we not bring in our intended target. We've had McCarthy, Rabiot, Bender, Kramer, Imbula, Illaramendi to name a few, and we've never had a definitive idea of who has been our preferred option. I think we have a list and it's dependent on the circumstances to whom we make a move for.

Berahino and 1 more. would be fanstastic. Plus getting rid of those mentioned would be great.
