I think if we were linked to a 14 year old right now it would be a struggle quite frankly, when you see teams in the lower half of the table willing to spend quite heavy on fees and wages such as zaha signing a new deal then you know it's going to be tough with our wage policy.
Much was said last year about how good it was to have such a tight collective bunch who love poch etc, but that will only serve to carry us so far we have to evaluate our business model although I won't hold my breath.

It carried us to 2nd!!!!
We finished the season incredibly strong and seem to promise nothing other than more improvement.

And yet, you see that as an urgent need to fully change our business model?!? o_O

A little frustration being expressed is understandable for those that hang by the ITK that comes in and have seen early targets evaporate in years gone by - Batsuayi et al and Lamar appears to be one this year. Sometimes, this leads to a Sissoko, but we should also remember that there have been quality signings that have occurred later in the window as and when they become available - Son, Eriksen, Lloris, Dembele being a few off the top of my head. Not ruled out so far...

Barkley
Sessegnon still in play
Pereira the Porto RB

Those 3 would be a good start, plus you'd have to imagine that a Son-esque talent could become available, or is being worked on, that hasn't entered our radar yet, much like Son hadn't at this point in the summer in 2015.

It would have been nice to see our finishes in the last two seasons, allied with the extra TV cash bring about us getting in some well scouted quality players early, but we have to accept that this hasn't transpired so far. However, we are still a long way off determining the success of this window.

There are still plenty of talented players out there, plying their trade in good leagues and teams who we can offer better wages to with the added bonus of CL, PL etc etc

I think people are worried that we may have hit our ceiling under our current model and without increasing the wage cap we will lose our best players and thus fall behind

Could be others clubs offering stupid money to Fulham making it hard for us to agree a fee.

Agree, but they all signed deals in September and the transfer focus will have changed since then anyway.

A lot of them signed in December. Winks was in February, Davies only signed in March. Others haven't even signed yet so may have had a more recent update.

I understand what the fears are, I am suggesting they are largely unsubstantiated.
What is to say we have hit our ceiling? Missing out on a player? That happens to clubs with bottomless pits of oil money...

Who has conclusive information on what we pay our players?? No-one here, i'd suggest!

What's to say, that with performance-based bonuses the players arent bringing in the equivalent to £200k a week?

Is this the same ceiling which was going to see us jettisoned from the top 4 by the big spending, sleeping giants around us last summer?!?

Seems mindless!

Let all the charlie big potatoes sort themselves out with Mdappy, James, Matic, Sandro and all the other big heads going for silly money. Let them spend in excess of £200 million or whatever whilst struggling to offload their deadwood.

I'm so happy we're not involved in all that nonsense. Stupid fees and wages being thrown about.

Seems to me a lot of people aren't happy until we spend £60 million on someone paying them 150k a week, regardless of who it is.

Exactly. We realistically need a Wimmer replacement, maybe a Walker replacement, and another attacking option with Lamela and Son being question marks for the beginning of the season. Long term, an Eriksen backup is always needed.

But none of these needs require immediate £60m acquisitions . If we're in for Lemar and he goes to Arsenal for £50m + £150k/week, then we weren't going to get him in June, July, or the last day of August. Let the big spenders do their thing and when clubs start worrying about their assets that will be out of contract or want out, we have plenty of options on the market.

Now only time will tell whether those options will be Son or Sissoko.

I fully expect to get a lot or red ink for this, especially from the BSoDL.......:D

I couldn't care less if we sign Lemar or Sessegnon or whoever. The bottom line of it is ambition, that's what people should be worried about, not failing to sign to relative nobodies......its not all to do with wages.

We'll only get by for so long doing it how we're doing it. Fantastic job Munchkin, well done Pochettino, but we carry on like this and it WILL come out on top............At some point Levy has to either put up or shut up because Pochettino isn't stupid and neither are the players. I'm not talking about signing young talent because that isn't going to impress anyone, if Levy (the club) doesn't send the message that we are ambitious, the manager and players will pick up on it and before you know it, the club will be like a scene from the Titanic, with everyone scrambling to get a lifeboat. They'll only wait so long. IMO we've got a season before the brownstuff hits the fan......If we don't win anything this coming season and Levy plays his usual game, it's going to be highly likely (IMO) that we are fucked.

Proper fucked.

BUT there's a LOOOONG way to go in the window yet. So i'm putting the rubber knife back in its box and slipping the noose under the mattress until the window closes.

I said on here a while back and got laughed at, it's make or break time for Levy. Either he comes to terms with reality and ups the wages or we go backwards. Not only missing the players we want, but also losing the players we do have. From current ITK it seems the chickens are already coming home to roost.

This is no different to the last summer window or the one before that. We didn't get the early targets and the doom and gloom set in(exactly the same narrative every window). This is the reason we don't put all our eggs in one basket and have numerous targets to go for. Worth remembering we have improved year on year despite not getting the early targets, before we all commit harikari.

We need a Van der Vaart esque signing to lift the place up to the next level. When Rafa arrived it was a coup - fans were buzzing and so were the other players who knew they had to raise their level.

The fee was small but the stature of the player was not. It makes everyone else stand up and take notice.

That's a very fair point, what is your opinion of Sissoko, Nije, the signings that didn't work out. Were they players Poch really wanted or players to fill squad holes after we couldn't get our main targets?

Not so sure about Sessegnon being straight on the bench at Man Utd or Arsenal.

Both clubs are well-stocked at left back:

Arsenal
Monreal
Kolasinac
Gibbs

Man Utd
Shaw
Rojo
Blind

He'd be even further behind at those two clubs...
Depends what's happening with Shaw...
