It's just means buying young players cheaper, whose resell value will raise as they get better(bale, modders),so really looking at players as an investment. The opposite is spending 30m on a superstar player approaching the end of career ,resell value will decrease as the player gets older.

Not quite, it is more about finding the parts to the puzzle rather than looking for the complete article. In baseball you can argue that you don't need everyone to hit home runs as they would be expensive players, what you need are players that can do enough to get on base - rather than slogging round for homers you crawl around base to base. it doesn't make it too exciting but it is effective. It's difficult to apply the same statistical elements to football due to its more fluid nature and hence it becomes more of a finacial model as you described. If you were looking at stats you would look at defenders who made the most clearances or blocks, midfielders with the most possesion or assists etc etc. Someone like Britton from Swansea would be a dream signing for Liverpool on this model but it doesn't always work out - i believe Downing and Adam were two of the highest assist makers in the 2010/11 season and hence Liverpool went after them, turns out what they had at their previous clubs may have only worked with the other players around them. Anyway.......... I think we are in for a quiet week so enjoy the banter and fingers crossed for the first week in July and the start of pre-season training under a new boss!

Well Fergie said Levy was "a bit different" and Harry said Levy wants to take the club in a different direction.

Maybe we're going to become a rugby club...
Rugby is such a rough game. I have it on good authority (cannot confirm till Monday, say) that we are moving into Major League Croquet.

So basically we still have to be patient until at least next week, and we're looking for players who don't want big wages but will be potential superstars and we want a few of them?

Well that should work out very easily...

Hmmmmn.

Less puns. More ITK chat.

Well, considering there is no ITK chat - why don't you look at other threads that may welcome a contribution?

I'd be Sarry if that happened.

Leicester-n a corner and do rugby related puns all day... Yay HappySpur!

Everyone is pretty convinced AVB is signing....i have a sneaking suspicion it may be someone else, the fact that it was a mixed reaction to the idea (of AvB) and itk had suggested we would not be disappointed.....but i suppose maybe that was because of what/who will arrive at the same time....?

I'm off work this week and struggling for an internet connection due to redecorating going on so there's a few bits below that may have been missed from FTL...

Both GrahamRoberts and BEN posted yesterday that Vertonghen will happen/is done. My opinion: Presumably much like Gylfi in that all will be announced together with the new manager.

And MadridSpur has posted this today...

Confirmed couple of meetings have happened. Modric wants to come, personal terms no problem. Spurs want player and cash or £35m+ in cash.

Sahin has been mooted but Mou likes him and wants to see him have a good preseason.

Not really new I know but passing on.

Would take £35m in cash and then let us get value replacements. The problem is, if we accept £25m in cash + Sahin and he doesn't turn out to be the player we thought, then we've lost out.

If we take the £35m and spend it on an established replacement at £20m (Moutinho?) then we are virtually guaranteed quality for our money.

Moneyball, a book by Michael Lewis examining the use of statistics in baseball to devise a cost-effective and successful team.
The Liverpool lot are into it too, although they appear to have missed out the cost-effective bit.
It's a cracking read (as is all of Lewis's work), i've not seen the film.

And the successful bit

And judging by Downing's zero goals - zero assist stats since he joined i'd say also the stats bit of it too.....

We've also got it very wrong before with players looking nowhere near capable or ready for the job of getting us to the CL. We need real proven quality and Luka especially really did make us tick, combined with a new man coming in and the adjustment period I'm unsure about us pushing for the Top 4.

We've also been linked with shedloads of these sorts of players before, Falcao, Remy, Rossi, Aguero etc., some before they moved and became established. We haven't signed too many of them tbh.

I'd love it yes, but I'm flitting between scepticism and worry at the moment. Fingers crossed like. I'd be happy with the strikers we've been craving for what, almost 4 years now?
