Going rate for a starting top 5 pl midfielder surely? Can't blame the lad imo
If we were lucky enough to get MS in, on 80k plus a week, bentaleb will play just as many games as him, right beside him. That's the view they will have

We don't want to look back and realise Bentaleb was our 'Pogba' because we couldn't agree a contract. He is currently one of the top midfield prospects in England and we already own him. If we were to let him go we would need to spend somewhere between 10-20 million to replace him plus the new guys wages and we could still end up with another Paulinho or Capoue.

He knows he is in a very strong position and we may just have to accept that we might have to pay over the odds.

Hope there's been some miscommunication here. NB has never seemed the Sterling type and I'm sure there's a more than generous offer on the table, with incentives for continued improvement. Slightly worried that someone like City may have been having a word in his ear...

Not worried at all about Bentaleb. When was the last time we lost someone over a contract dispute? Levy's good with renewing them.

You can say a lot about Levy but he has very rarely failed to reward young players as they have progressed through the side. Kane and Mason have signed up and although there is a class ceiling of course Bentaleb is in terms of development closer to Kane than Bale and Modric when they left. He is clearly acting above his station which is a massive shame.

Yes but I'll say again, when the likes of Dembele, Capoue and Paulinho have been on 50-60k and he's kept them out of the team then I don't really see how people can argue that he doesn't deserve parity as a matter of fairness. And that's before you have the argument that if he's a more established player in the team then add a bit more on top...

You cant spend poorly on some players, raise the 'average wage', and then expect others to put up with being 'short changed'. The club has effectively set the wage of a first team midfielder at 50-60k. It might not be right, but I can see why he'd hold out for that figure... Even at such a young age.

Just because someone on high earnings is not in the team it does not mean everyone should be getting the same as him, Adebayor is on like 90k a week, does that mean the starting 11 should be getting 90k

Did you say that when Walker won the young player of the year? He has potential. That means he has the potential to earn higher wages. If he fulfills his potential. Wages you pay what they are worth. If they do well you give them a raise.

It will be his agent doing the bargaining. Bentaleb just probably leaves him to it.

"fairness" isnt a great argument either. those players were bought in and gambled on, and we lost. fortunately we had bentaleb step up and keep them out of the team as you said. however, that doesnt mean we need to make the same mistake like with capoue dembele etc and gamble on bentaleb and pay him "whats fair." we are in a position where he is already ours and from a risk standpoint are able to dictate what we pay him, rather than just gambling away 50-60k because thats what we would do for an "established" player.

besides didnt raheem sterling have a contract that would basically scale with his scale and age? an increase every so often and not just a set in stone amount for X years? seems like it would be a good fit for bentaleb and then if he pops off and becomes a world beater, we can pay him accordingly

To be honest 80k is f-all for young top 4 type players. Bentaleb is clearly in that type of talent bracket so I don't blame him for asking.
Really 80k? I mean he was good and at times very good but 80k already? Sorry, for me 40-50k and if he stars next season talk again. This player/agent greed is getting out of hand. (If this is even true)

It depends on their contractual situation. I am sure Walker did expect a pay rise when he won young player of the year, especially if he was entering the last year of his contract and was in the midst of negotiating a new one.

Indeed.

"...Whatever they offer we'll double it..."

For what it's worth. I think he and the money men will reach an amicable agreement.

I don't understand this line of thinking.

The money is in the sport, whether we like it or not. The money not going to the supporters. Ticket prices are not coming down. So, that leaves the owners and players to split it up. Players are just looking for their share, of an ever-increasing, slice of the pie.
