If we sign Friedel as number 1 then it is a disgrace. I can't see him coming to sit on the bench. 5 years ago would have been a great signing. Now he is far too old. I've watched him on numerous cases for villa and his agility is no longer there. Such a waste of money on wages too as he won't be here got under 30k.

Not only for Harry identifying him but for Levy sanctioning the deal.

Bloody 40 years old. Van Der Sar called it time because he knew he could never be as good again as he was this year. And he was one of the best ever. Friedel should follow suit and retire. He is only continuing because he is bankrupt.

Yep

I'd rather stay with Gomes, I really would.

Harry must see Friedel as a stop gap for one season only why we continue to look...at 40 though there really isn't another way to attempt to speculate on the thinking behind it.

I have always liked Friedel, he's had some outstanding seasons but at the age 40 - it just doesn't enthuse me one little bit.

He's been better at Villa than lots are making out but lets no kid ourselves he's on the decline big time.

If signing Friedel gives Gomes a kick up the arse so he cuts out the mistakes and demonstrates he can be the world class keeper some of us think he has the potential to be, then it'll be a great signing.

Otherwise I really can't see the point.

I agree but as someone else pointed out I can't imagine him coming in to sit on our bench. We must have made him some assurances or he would have just stayed at Villa. It doesn't make sense for him to uproot his family just to come and be our number 2.

He's bankrupt I expect the most important thing to him is the £££ not starting every week

Genius ITK, saying we'll be disappointed means he'll be able to say he was right whether we sign him or we don't.

Carlo is only contracted for another year and Friedel is still a better keeper IMO. Imagine Friedel is a 2 year deal. Gomes could learn a lot from him.

What if he's the one coming in to be number 1 and Harry is happy to sell Gomes back to PSV, you think thats a good move...?

It's going to be a long transfer window, after many long transfer windows in the past.

Whilst the above statement can be interpreted in a number of ways and without wishing to single am_yisrael_chai out, please remember that ITK abuse is not conducive to enjoyment of this section of the site.

Not suggesting the above is abusive, but seems an opportune time to remind everyone of the rules that have been in place for donkey's years.

And before we go through the twice yearly saga of winding Adiepf up, can we also refrain from trolling and/or member abuse.

No, I'd consider it to be the equivalent of turning a used condom inside out so you can have a quick second shag when the long term solution is to get the bird to take the pill.

In other words, you may get a bit of short term enjoyment, but in the long term you'll have nothing but regrets.

If we are signing Friedel, I can't see the point of all this cloak & dagger stuff. It's hardly as if we're competing with the other top 5-6 clubs for his signature. I'm sure he can't believe his luck - Dr Spurs resurrects his declining career.

As a top 5 club we should behave like one in terms of signings to send out a signal to other clubs - signing Friedel is like waving a white flag.

Gomes gets told he has a real fight for a place to prove he's better than an ageing, top class goalkeeper this season. He does and both keepers do well and are rotated on performance, or Friedel performs better and Gomes is sold next year and a younger keeper is brought in to the team with Friedel as solid, experienced back up with Carlo having now left the club.

OR Gomes is sold and another younger keeper brought in this window to compete with Friedel.

I'd guess the former and depending on the other potential keepers I'd be pretty content with any of these scenarios to he honest.

Weren't we this close to signing Neville, then nothing came of it? Untill we see it on the OS, I'm in complete denial to believe that we've even made contact with Friedel.

Should Gomes really need another goal keeper to push him though?

I dont buy that personally.
