We might not spend £100m but if Bale goes for big money we'll def spend a lot to replace him that be sure of and JJ has said as much.

Bale is ONE player who only needs replacing with one player. And we have a squad of good players. If we can't improve, we won't buy. That's been the strategy this summer with 3 good signings and that's how it will continue.

The idea that we sell for £100m then go out and buy three £30m players or whatever is pure fantasy.

Are you gonna buy three converted left backs-cum-attackers, or three forwards or 2 centre backs (actually yeah, do that one)?

No he didn't, he said 3 in, one of which is soldado, he insinuated that contreua was one of the others, that leaves one more! Bales position I would think.

I'm simply going by what JJ said. Mentioned earlier in the week that we have big things planned if Bale goes and we'll still be very strong going into season. Off course we're not going to sign 3 world stars, but Contreau will cost £10-£15m and Lamela will cost at least £30m+ as Roma have no need to sell. We simply cannot afford to not replace Bale.

The thing with Bale is that one player alone will not replace what he offers. It would need to be two classy wing/attacking midfield players for me to give us more options and see us become less reliant on single players to come up with the goods. As direct Bale replacements both Bernard and Lamela would be my choice, and any investment we make on them is likely to be recouped and more because of their age and potential. Other players like another young striker, a LB, 2 CB's (one emergency/utility & one young) need to be signed regardless of what goes on with Bale.

We bought 3 players for 50?

Meaning if I am right, we're already running 34 million in the red.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not being alarmist as I don't think we need to service that from any sale of Bale......but I could see it being tempting to the powers that be.

I agree with this on the whole.

One thing I would add though is that I don't think the poor performances of our strikers, and the sudden jump in Bale's scoring last season are unrelated.

Bale became incredibly selfish. I certainly don't blame him, as he clearly had the ability to back it up, and was probably fed up with our strikers fluffing their lines.

However....there were many, many times last season when Bale could have played an easy pass to Ade or Defoe to more or less guarantee a goal. Look at Bale's 3rd goal away to Villa last season and you can see that the smart move would have been to pass to Ade. When Bale became more attacking his number of assists dropped considerably (I believe..not sure if that's backed up by the stats). He stopped passing. He was not in a position to cross. In short his goals are only one side of the story.

I'm willing to bet that if he stays he doesn't provide many assists for Soldado. Bring in a creative player that makes a lot of chances and it's perfectly conceivable that his goals will be made up elsewhere.

Long time lurker, first time poster. Just had to sign up. (Go easy on me - I'm Canadian. Family emigrated from Shoreditch and brought the love of Tottenham with them to Toronto)

Anyway - the mystery two were mentioned last week by JJ as being ones who would take our squad above Liverpool and Arse but still below Man City, Man Utd and Chelski.

Now if Arse grab the rat from the Bin Dippers that would probably give them the edge if we lose Bale. But if we grab the rat plus Contrao to go along with Soldado....then we will certainly have a stronger squad.

Add in a crypic from the Goat (possibly via JJ?) stating it would take a "bite" out of our funds and I think I see who the replacement would be.

Or is that just a crazy idea?
