Audere est Facere.
All we can do is hope that we have other targets in in place if our first choice doesn't come through. But the replacements have to be better than the current players - else I'd rather we blooded some more youngsters.

It's obviously Bender. His price tag wouldn't be huge and a deal could probably quite easily be struck. However he's a title winner, CL runner up and CL regular. It would make sense for him to wait to see if any CL clubs want him before signing for us.
Backup is probably someone like Vogt.

To be honest we really need to get business done before the 1st day of the season. So many years have I seen us squander points early on.
Enough of this fallacy already!

EDIT: There is no evidence that we drop more points in the beginning of the campaign.

Meh, whoever Goat's DM is, sounds like they will always be looking for a bigger team to come in. That is not the attitude I want to see here. I don't want a player who thinks he is too big for Spurs.

It might be the case of the club holding out for a better deal - not just the player. Contracts are so complicated these days there could be all sorts of details written in stone that could effect how much selling a player brings in.

I mean, just look at the Alderwerield deal - he had a buyout cause for southampton, but AM played them like a pack of cards and ended up getting a significant amount more for the player.

BUT you also run the risk of getting no-one at all!
We all covet exciting players, top names or up and coming ones, but we need to be realistic at who we can really bring in!
Better no one at all than repeats of Paulinho, Capoue, Stambouli et al

I do hope we as a club are not just hanging out to be a player's second choice. We need players who appreciate playing for us and actively choose into our long term plans like Lloris did. We need to enquire, make our offer, agree terms and set a short term period of time for the player to agree or back out. I don't like this idea of players waiting for top clubs to come in before making their decision. If they've had no contact already, they need to show a bit more respect than that to us and we need to show we're big enough not to chase and chase after players who don't really want to come to the Lane. I think we did set a deadline with Berahinho, hope so and hope we do with the cdm we're after.
Well said! My sentiments exactly! There is a thing called pride. We should be considered potential players 1st choice and not a 2nd or 3rd option

But ITK indicated that SB was happy to come to us it's the club waiting for bigger fish to enter the market. Not always as straight forward as you would like it to be.

I'm with this, 1st team quality or no one at all when it comes to cm

See that the Goat is saying that a target we are after has an agent that is holding out to see if a late offer comes in for him from another club. If the player wants to go to the highest bidder the question should be why does he genuinely want to come to Spurs. Sooner take a player second or third on the list who actually wants to play for Spurs, than end up up the second coming of Ade.

I hope we don't hang about for this mystery player to make up his mind. I think we can give him a couple of days, but after that we should move on. Especially as he's presumably not making up his mind because he thinks there's a realistic chance of going somewhere else.

Surely an agreement could be in place in principle, but the selling club could just delay for as long as both parties are willing to wait.

I'm sure we've done the same with sales before.

you ask a girl out (she's an 8/10) and she's not sure - she asks for you to wait a couple of weeks while she thinks things through. Do you wait - or do you ask her best friend out (a 6.5/10) just because you know she'll say yes?

in seriousness, young players coming through have an affinity with teh club - and seeing a few come through in the last couple of seasons brings back an identity to this club.
foreign players do not have an affinity - they look for the best club/ deal for them. foreign players who come to us must be thinking we're the best that they can get. Wouldn't make them perform any better than a player who would rather go to a CL club, but has to come to us.
So all British players have affinity for Spurs? I really hope you get my drift.

If our second or third choice player then said similar "I would rather sign for a club that has me as their first choice rather than for Spurs who has me as a backup plan to their first choice...." We would be in a problematic setting.

I think we shouldnt fool ourselves to think that we are first choice for top players if they have the chance to choose Real Madrid, Barcelona or other top clubs in Europe. Lets say it is Sven Bender we are talking about here, as long as he is happy to sign in the end and ready to "die" for the club, I couldnt care less if he had chosen Barcelona over us if he had the chance.

Exactly. Every player should want to play for the best club they possibly can.

I doubt that would be the case with Bender. No offence to the guy but all of the top clubs are pretty much sorted in his position. Why I think the Goat is on about someone else.

How would a second or third choice player be aware of the pecking order?

I am sure that Wimmer didn't delay his agreement just because the was wondering who was ahead of him as a preference.

THIS.

In terms of players signed in the last few seasons they seem to be the ones that stick and become good too. From memory Lloris, Vertonghnen, Eriksen and Chadli were all players who came to us as first choice options and were very keen to join the mighty Spurs!
As a counterpoint to the whinging of many in here, Eriksen and Lloris were also both signed in the closing days of the window, after the season had started. Patience.

All agreed, to be honest they should just shorten the transfer window and close it a week before the season starts. That way all the shenanigans are sorted before a ball is kicked and we avoid these problems.

Totally agree re: TW closure, but understand the reason it doesn't close before our 1st match is that we start slightly sooner than other European Leagues (1-2 weeks only , mind) and they are not keen for early closure. As we are technically competing with them for players also, it would put EPL clubs at a significant disadvantage. Or so say 5 Live.
