Nearly 4 years though now Matty, we've never replaced Berba. We wern't going for the title back then, its no excuse I'm afraid, I think its a shambles, and one bad injury to ade and all that great work would go down the pan.

spot on. We've built a great squad but have this glaring achilles heel (ie only one player, a loanee, who can play up top on his own which is now key to the way we play) which could see us undo all that hard work. Frustrating.

Let's not get overly wrapped up in Ancelotti's words shall we? To start with we can't compete with PSG so the players available to them aren't available to us.

This is why people get so stroppy after the transfer window...some expectations of the sorts of players we can buy are ludicrously ambitious.

Unfortunately he probably isn't to most of the world, but to PSG's mega-bucks almost eveeryone is in play

True, but is the French league that interesting?

I could understand megabucks and Spain, but France? I mean it's a fine league, but not yet up there with Spain or England... money talks though.

Can't see us getting any of those players.

How come we've suddenly become so cash shy when it comes to making a signing, are we skint or something?

Something like 15mil spent in 3 transfer windows, not including this one so far.

Saving the pennies!

To be honest, when we qualified for the Champions League, I am sure agents around the world must have been contacting us with regards to higher profile players, I am sure Levy would've said no because we got to where we are today with a good wage strucutre so why should we break it? Van der Vaart was offered to Liverpool as well as us wasn't he? I am sure he was offered to them with the prospect of squeezing more money from them, despite them not being in the CL.

I think we are more likely to buy players from lesser teams than teams around us/CL teams. The likes of Samba/Hoilett/Vorm/Ba, for the simple reason that they are within our wage structure. If we were to bid for anyone like Cavani, Llorente, Hazard, Remy, Leandro then I am sure half the clubs around Europe would make a bid also.

Unfortunately unless a deal falls in our laps like VdV did, I can only see us recruiting lesser known players, not that I am against that. I would love some of the players we have been linked with, Samba and Vorm would be great additions to the squad but even they are looking likely to go elsewhere at the moment.

Maybe we are saving for a new trophy cabinet?

they're spedning about 65% of thier turnover on wages. we're spending about 53% of ours

If financial fair play really is enforced LFC will have to change that.

They are...and they are not alone in paying this level of turnover on wages: I suspect that they took a Leeds-like punt on regaining former glory and CL money, at which point the wages would stay more-or-less level but the revenues would increase so they were paying less of their turnover on wages. If that is correct, they really could be fooked - they wouldn't be able to sustain even the current, inadequate, squad at that wage level, and at the same time, the longer they miss their former level of attainment, the less likely they are to maintain their current global fanbase, and the more likely it will be to actually shrink - whiich will, of course, lead to less revenues.

Obviously, this would be dependent on UEFA actually showing guts in enforcing their fair play regs.

I'd happily take any of those forwards. Apart from that guy Pav who I hear is piss!

Pav is Super

Leandro Damaio is the guy to take the punt on.

The more I think about the situation, the more I think that is the best option. Sell Pav, get Leandro - cover/competition for Adebayor. it is all we really need.

Nearly 4 years though now Matty, we've never replaced Berba. We wern't going for the title back then, its no excuse I'm afraid, I think its a shambles, and one bad injury to ade and all that great work would go down the pan.

Sadly, that is the bottom line

Don't get carried away with Ancelotti naming the strikers he's been offered. He is a massive wind up merchant and after naming the strikers he had a cheeky little grin. He was pulling the interviewers legs.

Or, he was just naming the strikers who's names he has seen constantly linked with moves and saying "Yeh we are PSG we have bags of money all these strikers have been offered to us and yes we will buy them all" That's the impression I got

Which they won't, or can't - the process of enforcing will be a legal minefield and all the big clubs which it would most affect know this.

The Falque signing only makes sense if we are looking to bring in further loan signings. It means that we are either looking to bring in a loan player from Juventus OR we are looking to bring in two loan players (Beckham?, Kaka?, Milito?, Amauri?).

Given that Falque will need to be registered next season (he was under 21 this season) we now need to lose a net 7 players from our squad before the start of next season. Worrying.

Is that including Adebayor?

I imagine: Adebayor, Pav, dos Santos, Gomes, Bassong and maybe Gallas might not be here next season?

Caulker should still count as under 21 next season, so that will cover one of Bassong/Gallas places without using up a spot.

No excluding Adebayor. Next season we will have a number of loan players returning (Bentley, Jenas, Naughton, Khumalo) and players who have reached their 21st birthday (Walker, Rose, Falque). I'm assuming that we will either keep Adebayor or sign a replacement (wishful thinking?) so that has a neutral affect on our squad. Gallas will still have a year left on his contract.

Caulker and Townsend will still be under 21.

It will be very difficult to shift the likes of Gomes, Gio, Corluka, Kranjcar, Bentley and Jenas as potential buyers will not be able to afford their wages; even if Levy is prepared to off-load them at a loss. With that 6, we are probably spending £15m a year in wages for players who will rarely play. As I said - worrying.

Can someone explain this please - cap on total loan players in total and only 1 from each club?
Also: Couldn't it mean we like him but he needs experience so we're gambling on making the move permanent now to give him playing time at a decent Championship team?

Maxiumum of 3 loan players and only one from any club.

We had an option to sign Falque at the end of the season. Why take up the option now unless it was to free up space for additional loan signings?

Day 17 in the Big SC household.......feck alls happening.

£85m buying up the land around WHL. £17-40m on a new training ground. Other costs towards the new stadium costing around £25m.

Are we skint? Probably.

Officially  at the reaction to Llorente having a medical at Liverpool... which he isn't.

Talk about typical Spurs and typical this place - automatic assumption from almost everyone that he's already signed for them when the only 'evidence' is Chinese-whispered hearsay which isn't even remotely true.

Combine that with the usual 'the board are useless we need to sign the following 18 players: Bogdingo, Fandango, Mongbongi (who is having a great season with Club XYZ), Zippy, that kid Wiffwaff, Fabio Contontontonorae, Davos Luvsos Kidslos etc etc to have a chance of avoiding relegation' and it must be transfer window time again!

Which they won't, or can't - the process of enforcing will be a legal minefield and all the big clubs which it would most affect know this.

This is a never ending argument, PT, ultimately the proof will be in the pudding, simple as.

The factor everyone, like you, who are so confident that UEFA will not enforce their own regs remotely strictly is that every club, including ours, and, you have to assume, United (who can only lose by unrestricted spending ability from Citeh), will kick up one hell of a goddamalmighty stink about it. And the ultimate consequence (that I would totally endorse), would be that every club who remotely can, including ours (again, that I would totally endorse), would be to get themselves as goddamfeckingalmighty rich owners as they can and the transfer market to totally spiral out of control. Simple.

Can UEFA allow that? I don;t think so. If they even tried to enforce their regs after that happened, they would only be leaving themselves open to showing favouritism to certain clubs, while trying to close the barn door after the horse has bolted.

I believe there are actually signs, already, of clubs like Chelsea and Citeh trying to meet fair play reg targets.

When viewed in this light, I can only return to the conclusion that Liverpool have taken a massive gamble with the wages/transfer fees they have been paying, and not they they intend to try to face UEFA down.

In connection with SPs comment , I thought it interesting that Cahill who was reportedly asking for 120 Gs went down to reportedly 80 Gs at Chelsea .

Is this the first sign that the tide has turned for the massive wages ?

Either that or someone just told Cahill that he had two hopes of commanding that type of wage as he quite clearly isn't that good.
