It still comes down to the Fair Play rules, we have to sell before we can buy as otherwise we run the risk of falling foul to them.
Gio and Pav gone equals around £50-60k in wages freed up
We also cannot afford to have dead money on the books i.e. people sat in the stands who are not in the 25 earning big money.
If I'm not wrong the reason Levy is screwing clubs for every penny is also because everything we spend must be within our incomings. An extra 1m each for Gio and Pav means an extra 2m we can spend

This is going to be the same for every club until some club decides to take FIFA to court to challenge it under trade restrictions laws.

to be honest when i said we will never sign a 30 million top notch world class striker in his prime or otherwise i really meant i dont think we would even sign a 20 million pound striker or even break our trnsfer record.. personally i think its all talk and until we actually have a brand new stadium built and been succesful on pitch at same time will we see a chance of signing such players. for now like u say its buying strikers around the 15 mill mark and depending on what manager signs him will always be somewhat of a gamble
yep.

You're right, let's just sit around and watch as nothing clubs like Chelsea and Man City buy success...

The one comment I have to make is.. how do you know what a three day old cheese toastie looks like, nedley? They are obviously too delicious to just leave that long.

Things look to be rather chaotic and if you apply some common sense and logic, it's unlikely that we will sign anyone.

We probably will be active, in the last few hours - probably more of a show than anything to say look we have tried.

Fact remains, lots of our 'bigger' targets turn us down.
I would imagine even if we won the league the likes of City, Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal would still be a better draw for players.

Sad state of affairs considering we play attractive football, have a loyal fan base and have a nice looking kit.

But, the area is pretty shoddy, the stadium is small (in comparison to the others), and the money is shit ;-)

Players are and have been turning us down, fuck knows what the real reasons are, but can you honestly seeing us buying an already claimed world class centre forward?

They are the most expensive buys, on the most expensive wages. Looks like we would be going for young, to breed. Or very old, to cover.

How about both, but for the young to breed we give a chance to Coulibaly?
Perhaps loan an older player (Milito/Forlan), sell Pav and give Coulibaly a chance.
I just put a thread about the raves he's getting in chat section.

Ideally, thats what we should be doing, I'll pop over and take a look at your thread though.

It's quite clear we can't get the 'top' player, unless there is a bargain to be had somewhere, but honestly a VDV type signing is really very rare.

To me, the above is the only option we have, although I'm positive we will try (if we haven't already) getitng ade on a perm.

Maybe a bargains pops up at last minute but with lots going on at the moment (Harry's case, England job, uncertainty from the board), this could be our quick fix till summer.

Can we afford Ade's wage though?

Without putting the lad down, I've watched him a few times now and he looks a real talent and potential for the future. Great finisher but I don't think he is quite ready to make the step up to play first team football. Particularly, in our system where he would probably be expected to lead the line. For me, his all round game needs to be developed before he is ready. That's not saying that he shouldn't be involved in and around the squad and brought on in games to get some game time when appropriate. At lest one thing's sure, he will give more in the way of effort than Pav seems to.

I don't think any club in the world would be willing to pay 230K a week wages to him.

I would be tempted to play the boy inside right, the same way Wenger did with Henry. He could develop his game with a little less pressure

We gave Kane a go (he didn't impress me), perhaps we should give him a run

Hey, did you get my email a few days back?

Although a different position, Wenger is also giving oxlade chamberlain (18) his chance and i must say he was impressive.

Regarding the opening post in this thread, ironic that they were playing "Guess the identity of POTL" because was only 2 days or so ago I remember reading someone claiming that POTL identity is Les Ferdinand

Oxlade cost Wenger £12m he is bound to be close to first team football.

Good shout. Think Shaq Colthurst could be another worth looking at there aswell. Really powerful lad and has impressed me in the games I've seen. Speaking to Cardiff City coaches following the FA Youth Cup match, they too were very impressed with him and thought he was the difference between the sides due to his quality on the ball in the final third. Just a thought. Im sure HR and co know all about these players far more than I do and will give them their opportunity if and when they are ready.

Was a bit of talk about Coulibaly to Brentford on loan, what competitions are these lads going to play in now? Not very much.

Prove yourself worthy of a shirt by impressing on loan, there are far better and far more senior players who have had to do this. He may be an answer long term, but that doesn't matter one iota right now IMO.

POTL says sunflower and the Goat says rhododendron.

Sunflowers are from the aster family and rhododendrons are azaleas so both in their way are 'A' flowers. Perhaps we've lined up Andy Flower to drop his England cricket manager job and take over from Harry.

Of course in cryptic crosswords 'a flower' commonly indicates a river so perhaps we're signing Rio Ferdinand.

Not that POTL has ever shown the slightest indication that he is aware of the proper conventions for cryptic clues. He seems to prefer a definition of 'cryptic' entirely of his own devising along the lines of "My 1st is in 'pompous' but not in 'twunt'" thus maintaining the linguistic relativism and ontological pluralism that we all so appreciate.
