Does anyone else really not want Toby?

Unfortunately seems too much smoke for their not to be fire.
We want Toby surely! Played with vert at Ajax and international with a Belgian understanding. Get tough cookie in cm next to bent and we will look loads more solid. Trippier is such a grafter too. Just need a striker and winger. Shit just realised this isn't for this thread but for Toby A thread. But it took me a while to type so let me off :)

Alderweirald is no better than what we already have at CB, and if the ITK that he will only join to be fist choice is correct then I hope we don't sign him with that in mind. Dier is flawed, but TA is not enough of an improvement to warrant blocking his progress. Unless we get a significant upgrade I'd much rather let Dier develop and improve his positioning and awareness

I'm sorry but no. I live near Southampton and have seen more of their games than I would care to admit to. Alderwiereld is far better than Dier and has the ability to play in midfield as well. Verts and Toby at the back would be a huge improvement.

I'm a little concerned that there's been so little talk of forwards by ITKs. Martial was mentioned by JJ and is now seemingly out of contention after signing a new contract, and that seems to have been all we've had on the striker front. Talk of Schneiderlin, Imbula and Toby is all well and good, but IMO we are properly fucked if we don't bring in a striker to compete with Kane. Hoping that the lack of striker ITK isn't reflective of what's happening behind the scenes.

I tend to remind myself of the time Mr Van der Vaart snuck under the wire with no thought to inform our ITK brigade and Levy was laughing like a drain all next day.

Let's hope we get an outcome even half as good as that this summer!

I can live with us not getting ITK on strikers if we sort out that glaring weakness in our squad by signing [at least] one, but we need to actually get it done, ITK-foretold or not.

We're not buying Alderweireld to play in midfield and the likelihood is that he never will, so that's irrelevant.

Also, Dier's ceiling is so much higher than TA's. I'm also not convinced that TA is far better if at all, it's much easier playing in Southampton's conservative system with Schneiderlin and Wanyama protecting you.

I agree but maybe we are working methodically with our signings- from defence to midfield to attack?

I've made this point before, but in my mind, there is a certain profile of player that typically succeeds at Spurs in recent years. Players who have broken through to be key players at clubs in Europe's top 6 leagues, who have EL or CL experience, and been integral parts of their nationals teams all have tended to do well at Spurs. I'd say Lloris, Vertonghen, Chadli, Eriksen, Van der Vaart, Berbatov all comfortably fit that criteria before they came to Spurs. One could argue Modric and Soldado did too, but I'd argue the latter was the exception and not the norm. Players who fit that profile and who cost under 15 million pounds, who also happen to be under the age of 30 would be my preference for our signings.

Players who fit this profile that are still likely attainable: Cabaye, Alderweireld, Konoplyanka, Song, Clasie, Hernandez. A combination of them would improve us significantly. It seems like we are pretty interested in two of them, so hopefully we can land them and one of the CMs listed above, too.

As for Alderweireld and concerns about how he'd fit our system: Who has more experience playing for higher caliber footballing sides in their career, Toby Alderweireld (Ajax, Belgium, Atletico Madrid, Southampton) or Kevin Wimmer (FC Koln [poor attacking team that scored 34 goals all season and was constantly looking to defend against more talented teams], Austria [not a starter]). If there's someone you should be worried about not adapting it's Wimmer, not Alderweireld.

Or, there is a 100 page thread on KopCommunity about the various twists and turns of the Firmino transfer. We're so bombarded with information on Spurs transfers that we assume that we're the only club to have transfer dramas. That is 100% not the case.

We've been decisive already. We've chosen a target and he apparently had a deadline of next week to decide. We've also signed two new defenders.

What I'm commenting on is a classic case of knickers in a twist over nothing whatsoever. Mostly based on agent talk which in some cases may be spot on and on other occasions may be wide of the mark and out of date.

Basically chill out - and realise what world we're in and our place within that world.

firmino is in ready for preseason alongside their.other signings is the point. not how many pages they fill on a forum.

I think it's a bit futile to look at his performances for them, in Southampton's ultra conservative system Jose Fonte looks like a world beater. Hell, Maya Yoshida looks like a passable PL centre back. Dejan Lovren has looked utterly exposed with out the protection in front of him he had at Southampton. For Atletico when he played he was largely awful, and never stood out playing for Ajax on the limited occassions I saw him play for them

As a squad player I'm not so against signing him, but not at the expense of Dier's development. And a lot of people hate Fazio but I feel he brings more of the things we lack than anyone gives him credit for

I just feel it's an unnecessary signing when we have far more pressing concerns to address
