This is the way I read it. Porta used Mendez as the conduit between them and us with regards to Diaz where everything was above board and going well, with price and personal terms were in agreement and all in place. The contract was not signed though, as Diaz was playing for his country in South America.
Mendez then allegedly informed Liverpool of the pending sale, where Liverpool sent a delegate down to South Liverpool to meet with Diaz's representatives and made an identical offer to the one we were offering. Although Diaz was quite happy and willing to come to us, he opt to go to Liverpool instead.
Mendez has shown himself to be a snake in my opinion, as he used confidential information for his own gains. Spurs and Levy did nothing wrong as Diaz would have been a Spurs player if they had dealt directly with Porta. Unfortunately Porta wanted Diaz to represent them in the negotiations.
This doesn't quite add up because there has been multiple reports that the Liverpool deal for Diaz did not include Mendes, so it would not have been in Mendes interest for the Liverpool deal to go through.
