Think of the amount of times Bale plays the ball along the box with no-one anticipating. Dempsey loves to get into the box and score...

Yes and no, to be fair to Friedel before our two month long slump of bad results he was one of the top keepers in the Premier League. While it's true goalkeepers can sometimes save points, wouldn't you rather have a team that plays the opposition off the pitch?

Definitely, I think with no VDV and Modric we will probably score 10 less this season but equally I think we will concede less too to even it out

Exactly, he's just that kind of player that isn't anything special with technical moves or skill. He just has a really good football IQ. He can read plays and he pops up where he needs to be, when he needs to be there.

I guess time will show. Anyway, it's a fucking relief this transfer window is finally over. Now I can fuck the missus and get work done instead of constantly refreshing Spurscommunity 16 hours a day.

The more I think about it the more happy I am about Dempsey signing. Ideally I was hoping for us to sign a top class centre forward alongside a top class wing forward, but given neither were possible Dempsey's about the best compromise I can think of, and one I'm surprised I didn't consider more strongly sooner. I guess the age factor turned me off.

That said I simply can't put this window down as a success. Not a complete failure maybe but a sideways step at best. We've lost our two best players (arguably three if you include King) and we were always going to have to do some amazing business to make up for it. Ultimately though it's been adequate. Moutinho could have been the difference between adequate and great but oh well. Just frustrating that we always seem to leave ourselves those one or two players short of really challenging.

Intriguing that you pop up just before Spurs sign our first American player in a while :cautious:

I agree. I'm really warming up to him.

If he came from a foreign league and had a spanish sounding name I'm pretty sure everyone would be creaming themselves at the prospect of getting him for £6 million.

It makes a lot of sense. He'll play as right forward in 433. He'll provide us with plenty of goals and he'll come into the box from wider and get on the end of plenty of Bale crosses.

I think he is a bargain for £6m, it is only disappointing because we hoped for Llorente and Moutinho.
Too right its dissapointing for those reasons. and we have Lennon? We are gong older and slower again>

Do we still have the On the Line forum/thread? Or get Houdini to stick something up in the Sportsbook thing?

Lloris and Vertonghen are pretty big coups for us not getting CL this season. We've still got three big problems: lack of creativity in midfield (basically only Dembele and Sigurdsson can provide that now), lack of striker depth after Ade and lack of winger depth after Bale/Lennon. Dempsey does help with the latter two somewhat as he can play striker (at a level similar to Defoe at least) or a goal-scoring wide-forward. I wonder if Dempsey could push himself ahead of Lennon in the first choice team. Hope Sandro, Sigurdsson, Dembele, Bale, Ade, BAE and Vertonghen all stay fit cause we're going to need them.

It's a pretty disappointing final day with VDV out but if we'd got Moutinho + Llorente (or Berbs) on top of Lloris would been pretty great.

January's only four months away, hopefully we will have Leandro or another striker plus Moutinho (or another playmaker) and maybe an Isco type lined up for then...here's hoping we don't save that for Jan. 31!

I feel so "meh" about this transfer window. Overall I think we've made great individual signings, and all of them make sense in their own way. But still, the squad feels lacking. Gutted about not getting Moutinho and losing VDV. Although I think we have a great starting XI which is slightly stronger than our best XI last season.

But it's strange, we seem to have a never-ending supply of deadwood. We sell 12 players and we still have the likes of Jenas, Bentley around as well as the manager trying to shift Huddlestone and Dawson. I dread to think what reactions would have been today if we had sold those 2.

After hours of thinking it over, I'm extremely worried about the winter period. At a time where there is a lot of PL games, Europa league, as well as potential League cup fixtures (also possible postponed rearrangements), we have a massively thin squad.

  • Only Bale, Lennon, Dempsey and Bentley on the wings
  • One natural LB with 1/2 backups
  • Only 4 first team Cbs
  • Obvious striker situation
This isn't a great situation and as I said worrying. Lloris and Vertonghen will also need time adapting to the English game and the playing through the winter, as I think they have winter breaks in Belgium and France.

To be honest, looking at the squad as a whole, it's not great and I'm finding it hard to be optimistic about the coming season.
