I reckon Gvardiol is already too expensive for us.
I think it's more that he's courted by better clubs than us. We spent £60m on Richarlison and are reportedly paying Perisic over £150k a week.

Not being willing to pay isn't the reason we won't get Gvardiol.

I see Liverpool are now linked with Sofyan Amrabat.

Presumably the same Sofyan Amrabat who sent this place spiralling into the third circle of hell when he was linked with us in January, “no top club would ever entertain him”, “why isn’t Conte as smart as people on this forum”, etc.

I'm not too fussed about that TBH ...

He has had a great world cup but from what I understand he hasnt been at anywhere near the same level for his club. We have seen so many of those type of players over the years and I would be very wary of buying a player based on their form at an international tournament.

Yeah that's gone wrong at least as often as it's gone right as I recall.

I've always thought Shaqiri is much better for Switzerland than domestically for example.

Came here to say exactly the same. He was absolutely superb throughout the WC - amazing what you see when you actually watch a player instead of a YouTube highlights reel.

On another note, I would absolutely love to have Martinez as Lloris' replacement. I thought it was strange when Arse got rid of him as he did well for them. The shithousery from him and Romero would be delicious.

It is in a way. I think you're right about us being willing to pay the transfer fee, but not his wages compared to what (e.g.) City would offer.

Didn’t the arse do something similar with Davor Suker after a World Cup?

What’s more silly? Saying a player is average and not good enough for Tottenham based on several seasons of evidence or saying they are the bees knees based on about 7 matches…

I’ve seen quite a few players play really well for their club in the PL for 7 games in a row recently, should Tottenham sign them off the back of it? ?

City can pay more but in recent times we’ve paid Ndombele £200k a week, Perisic around £175k a week and others.

I think the ideas about us not paying high salaries or looking for sell on fees are outdated. Gvardiol is likely courted by the elite now, that’s the reason we’re very unlikely to get him.

Right…

Does that change the fact he signed for arsenal after a major international tournament?

Struggling to see the point of your reply.
I thought the point was he was bought on the strength of his international performance despite playing worse for his club.

From memory Sukor was playing well for his club.

We spent £60m on Richarlison in the last window
Technically we've spent £50m on Richarlison so far (the extra 10£m are potential add-ons) and therefore Ndombele is still our record signing currently.

There is going to be enough bickering about the players we do/don't get in January without needing to have a debate about a player we were linked with a year ago in a position that is now our strongest

Personally I'm hoping for a centre back and a forward next month. I don't get to watch loads of European football so I can't comment on many but I'd love us to get Skriniar and someone who can play on the wing and as a striker . I like Zaha but I doubt that would happen.

Another shout for trying to get Martinez in as Hugo's replacement. He would be perfect but Villa have loads of money now so can't see it happening.
