I think there's one important question that everyone's forgotten...

Have you never heard of a 6 pointer?

I'll start off by caveating that I'm not someone getting excited about our title chances. 15% at the moment apparently.

Have a look at this...
http://sportcast.co.uk/a-genuine-premier-league-super-sunday/

Lays out all the statistical expectations of the title race and some insight as to how big a deal this weekend is. Covers the top 4

As a lot of people have pointed out there's still 13 games to go but city, goons and manure are the most important ones.
As long as we don't lose those games we should be ok.

So explain how Leicester are 5 points ahead of us yet, had we beaten them, we'd be 1 point ahead of them?

How many points would it take us to over take them by 1 point?
6.

Oh good god. You're actually seriously asking me that....... ? Let me help you.

On the 13th Jan when we played them, they were 4 points above us. After that game they were 7 points above us. Had your rucking ridiculous theory of it being a 6 pointer lol been true, had we won the game we would have been 1 behind, honest its only 3 points for a win 4 behind, win the game 1 behind, its just nursery math, tough to understand but its the truth. By the way, its the 12th Feb, weve played a few games since a month has passed, honest so has leicester. Why not ask me that question again in another month, so I can make what you say look stupid again ?

The key point is about two teams playing each other that are close together in the table.

For example, if we're playing Villa, and Leicester are playing Sunderland, we may well get three points, but we have no say in whether or not Leicester get three points. We could both win, and we make zero progress on them.

When we're playing them, a win not only gives the winning team three points, it also means (inevitably) that the losing team drops three potential points. Therefore there are essentially 6 points at stake...three for the winning team, and a loss of 3 potential points for the losing team. Situations like that are called 6-pointer games.

If we'd beaten Leicester at the Lane, they'd have three points less than they do now, and we'd have three more.

We'd be above them by 1 point, instead of behind them by 5.

Let's put it another way:

Team A is one place above the relegation zone, and team B is directly below them by three points (and in the relegation zone). Both teams have identical goal difference.

If team B play team A on the last day of the season, and team B win 1-0, they not only gain three points on team A, they also stop team A from gaining 3 points (that's a total of six points at stake), and in the process they also improve their goal difference by +1 whilst reducing team A's goal difference by -1...therefore going above them and staying up.

6 pointers are called 6 pointers because they have the potential for one opponent to swing 3 points positively in their favour, and 3 points negatively against their opponents.

Nursery maths.
