Yes, certain players are beyond any club really - Real M. even lost Ronaldo to Juve. But there are (many) more players beyond the reach Spurs than beyond the means of, say, ManC or ManU.
I never said I Spurs can make players sign a contract. My point regarding Eriksen was that what he want is beyond the "willingness" of Spurs anyway.

Regarding Toby: well, maybe if Spurs had offered him what he wanted in the first place he'd not be in the position with Poch which he is now. Maybe is the key word here. I don't know what his agent put into his mind.

Apparently Toby was offered what he wanted. Poch asked Levy to break the club's wage structure to meet his demands. Levy agreed. Toby, or rather his agent, then decided that he wanted more money. Not sure how the club can be blamed for not giving him what he wanted. This one's on Toby for backing out of the deal.

Eriksen could be at any other club and he would probably still be in the same position as it's his dream to play for Real.

Both signed 2 and 4 years ago respectively when Liverpool weren't at the same level where they are now but well done on proving a point I'm not even trying to make ffs :ROFLMAO:

I'm not even saying we shouldn't go there, but we need better quality than Janssen and Nkoudou that's for sure - definitely need to aim higher than Mitrovic for example.

Who would you suggest?

You know that James Maddison lad who so many are suggesting we should be rushing out to buy, and we supposedly fucked up by not buying him before Everton did?

Remind me where he was purchased from & what league they were playing in.

Thinking about the Eriksen situation how would you guys feel about signing another player who might want to use us as a stepping stone to get a move to Barca or Real? If that was the only way to get Ndombele would you be ok with it? Personally I'd be fine with signing a major talent for two or three years before selling them for a massive profit if it helped us to win a major trophy.

I personally think that this is one step the club has missed out on and it seems hindered us. They want to be a big club not seen to sell and I back them for that but they also want the finest players.

This means we compete with Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Man City for talent without offering the success, financial rewards and cut themselves off for a USP of offering a platform mate for bigger clubs.

We have a target market that unfortunately means we offer little appeal. Ins have liked to see two more seasons of us following the model whereby we offer some we are linked with a better carrot for joining and as we can't do that financially or with trophies, the best thing we could have done is been the only Premier League club in the Champions League to offer a unique progessive avenue. Long term I wouldn't want it but in the space of a few years we've gone from signing Stambouli's & Fazio's to being the pickiest team in the world. It's better but it's left a gap

Mitrovic isn't good enough and we don't play to his strengths anyway, if you ask me I'd rather sell Lamela and add another forward like Zaha.

I'm not saying that there aren't good players down there, I'd love us to sign Grealish, Tierney or Aarons for example but my underlying point is using the example of the period when we used to sign players from lower teams as a transfer strategy is gone because we just simply cannot afford to rely on it.

I think it's a situation we're always likely to be in. The lure of RM or Barcelona coupled with the lifestyle and living conditions out there will always be strong, so any player on our books is likely to be attracted to that. The best players we have right now would probably all give it some serious considerationso, yes, if a player could improve us for a few seasons I'd be happy with that. There's always a slight chance that Dalston Junction would be more of a draw than Barcelona or Madrid. I know, it's a bit of a long shot.

Agree with this as a rule. Our strategy clearly isn't this at the moment, however i'm sure there are a couple of lower league/relegated players who fit a profile we're interested in.

I think if you look at the squads of Huddersfield, Fulham and Cardiff at the moment, you can see that the vast majority of players here (who play significant games i.e. 20+) are not good enough. That's why they're down/almost down. That's not to say there aren't players who could contribute in some instances or have potential in others. It's just that we now have to be a bit pickier in these purchases. Every £ spent here is money we can't spend on some required quality - if we spend any £ at all.

For me Sessegnon is still the standout option from these teams, IF Fulham work with us on the money. He's got potential and will have learned a lot this year and covers an area i think we need to improve upon (LB/LWB) although he seems to be further forward now.

Anything else from these teams is largely worse than we have.

I do get the Mitrovic talk and i do think he plays deeper/works harder than many give him credit for. His basket case days working against him. I'd prefer to have him as opposed to Llorente (a bit harsh on Fernando but just my 2 pennies) but agree with your point here - it's all money which would be better spent on a more flexible attacking option like Zaha/ultimately a better player.

Fair enough, although I think Mitrovic would be a proper handful in a better team.

I don't know if it's snobbery vs relegated/lower league sides but certainly getting players who are lesser quality than what we have won't propel us forward. As an example I don't think Tom Cairney, 28 year old from fulham is a good shout because he hasn't got the potential or current ability to improve our midfield but Max Aarons from Norwich has the potential to be a great right back who with the right coaching could be better than what we have. I think lower team gambles are good when done right but people throwing out mediocre players when we're in a wishlist thread seems strange to me.
In fairness, I threw out:

Sessegnon, one of the top young talents in England, 18, already achieved an enormous amount
Etheridge, dependable HG Vorm replacement
Mitrovic, clearly more useful than Llorente (though I’d not be against another year of Nando).
Schindler, a very good defender to anybody who has actually watched him rather than just looked at Huddersfield’s results.

Philip Billing at Huddersfield could be an interesting choice of young CM, perhaps?

Interesting read about whether he'd be a good signing for us - https://soccersouls.com/why-spurs-s...-huddersfield-town-midfielder-philip-billing/

You mean Leicester not Everton....

I'm not a Maddison fan personally think Brooks is different planet to him and it does seem we tried to buy him but he wanted regular football. I know it would be a bitter pill to swallow but I'd pay £40m for him even though he left Sheffield United for £11m last summer.

There is definitely some quality in the lower leagues but before we get there we really should be looking to what is available in the PL below top 6. For me Brooks is pick of the crop but clearly there are others like AWB - I'm no longer convinced he has what we need going forward - and Zaha (again I'm not a fan). If we are a big club but one who lack the kudos to buy Europe's best like de Jong or N'Dombele then we really should be looking at the PL's best below top 6. Personally I'd still like us to go shopping in Leverkusen, I started the Brandt and Havertz bandwagon and glad to see so many have joined, let's just hope Hitchen knows where Leverkusen is because many of our targets seems all too obvious and all too unattainable.

Missed him completely - looked lively from the few games i've seen him in. Definitely a standout player in their team for his age and would represent a reasonable gamble - not sure for us in terms of any real interest but i think he'll be bought back in the PL.

I think CM is an area we'd maybe gamble a bit in, if we have changes plus additions. This is what some of this talk boils down to - are we going to do a supermarket sweep on relegated clubs players? No. Could we gamble on some potential/cover if they tick enough boxes? Yes in some cases and maybe in others depending on who else we sign and where we are short.

We'd want to replace Wanyama, need to replace Dembele and may need to replace Eriksen. Very unlikely we'd splash out on 3 top drawer players but with the right buy in one of those instances we could afford to gamble a bit on 1/2 others if the stars aligned.

Yep. Absolutely meant Leicester, have absolutely no idea why I said Everton  , and I'm not gonna edit the original post because, well, I fuck up.

It's my one talent in life & I'm running with it. :finger:

The wage structure was broken already when Spurs re-signed Kane and Dele
I do not know exactly what went one behind the scene with Toby and his agent and Spurs, nor do I believe in all the stories circulating but if there is a (huge) rift between Pochettino and Toby I think there are other factors involved than just Toby's salary demands.

The snobbery towards ever buying from relegated or lower sides is alarming, particularly when so many of our best purchases in the past 20 years have been from lower down barring a few exceptional punts on overseas talent.

Robinson relegated
Walker lower league
Dawson lower league
Huddlestone lower league
Rose lower league
Parker relegated
Carrick lower league / 1 year relegated
Lennon lower league
Dele lower league
Bale lower league
Defoe lower league/ 6 months relegated

There is a HUGE difference between buying young potential from the lower leagues and buying players to be backup based on being "prem proven".

I don't see many arguing against Max Aarons, Sessegnon, Brooks and such but more worried about Mitrovic, Schindler, Billings and Cairney.

I know not everyone on your list was bought as a young prospect, but for the most part that has been the source to our success in the transfer market.
