Time Werner has agreed a deal with Bayern according to the German media.

Strange move for him. He’s such a counter attacking player who loves open grasss to run into and most teams just sit back against Bayern.

I don't think he cares about that. Money + best club in the country will probably suffice.

Sadly I think footballing reasons are rarely the decisive factor for players when choosing clubs to play for.

Seriously though. You don't think players such as Werner join Bayern because of footballing reasons? If not, what club should he play for "for footballing reasons"?

Judging by this thread there are a lot of options available in the summer but who knows if we will be decisive and go early for any targets or will be wait until the rich clubs have done their business and pick up the leftovers?

?????????

We know exactly what we will do and it won’t be this!

Weird post. The poster i was responding said Werner’s style of play didn’t suit the team he was joining.

I think most players choose money and quality of team they are joining over how they fit into the team.

Wasn’t criticising anyone and no idea what your issue is.

It wasn't personal. It's just that there's some comment about players going to clubs for non-footballing reasons, I agree with your second sentence.

What player would think "Yeah, this club doesn't play counterattacking football so it doesn't suit me"?

Equally may want to develop his game to become a more rounded striker?

Werner will play winger for them and be just fine. It'll be the same role Son plays, that we all wanted him to play here and get to rotate with Lewandowski for striker minutes. Don't blame him or question his decision one bit.

So frustrating, we should be working on wrapping up Berge for example right now. Rabiot, we should be continuing discussions so June 1 they are here in training.

Maybe we are and the club just have clamps on any leaks but it always seems like we don't start calling teams until the window opens.

edit: I guess we've been having the Joachim Anderson rumors.

What's to say we're not working on Berge and Rabiot ( or any of the other proposed targets for that matter)? I'm sure the club don't sit twiddling their thumbs waiting for each window to open.

Probably fair, just have little to no confidence in whoever is running transfers right now to do anything right after this last year.

Instead of twiddling thumbs, it is more enjoyable to scratch balls.

Maybe I'm overly optimistic but I'm putting our recent transfer blanks down to the Stadium overspend and the failure to land a naming rights deal. I expect both of those to be sorted by the beginning of the next window, so in the meantime I'm fairly confident that deals are being lined up. We'll see.

I hope so!

I think more important than which players we want to buy is deciding on a clear strategy, I haven't seen any evidence of a strategy for several years. A few years ago you could say Spurs bought young British players from lower teams, but how would you describe our transfer "philosophy" now ? I don't think we have one and those we have tried e.g. sign players who have fallen out of favour at elite clubs like PSG have been a huge fail. I'd be very happy if we acknowledged we can't compete for elite level senior players, probably can't even compete for elite level young players and as a result we are going to buy the best young players just below the elite level - so no de Jong, de Ligt or probably Havertz but yes to Wan Bissaka, Brandt and similar players. At least we'd have a clear strategy, a clear set of identifiable targets. Based on our links with Sturridge I fear our only strategy going into the next window is perceived cheapness, the same strategy that delivered Llorente, Aurier, Moura and others all of whom have disappointed and proved anything but cheap given that their values have gone down while the more expensive alternatives to us at the time have gone up.

I know this won't be popular but I question the wisdom of giving Poch absolute power and not having a DoF. He is a great coach but I question his record on player acquisition e.g. making Dani Osvaldo Southampton's record purchase. I'd much rather we had in place a quality DoF who could focus all their time on player purchases / sales and progression from the academy (including purchasing for the academy) and leave Poch to work his magic on making players better and making the whole more than the sum of the parts.

I've been saying this for some time now. Having a top quality DoF is the way forward in this day and age of football. Them down the road are going and getting Monchi now, someone who I'd happily have making decisions for us. I don't want Poch to have no say, but giving him pretty much full control of transfers is a ridiculous decision. Pep doesn't even get full control of transfers at City..
