Figured i'd escape the doom and gloom in the itk discussion thread and hide in here for a bit. With all the negativity re 'having a thinner, weaker squad' one positive to take is it might give some of our lads a real opportunity to get minutes and make a name for themselves. Infinitely more likely winks, onomah, edwards et al will get minutes without the likes of sissoko in the team.

just quoting your sig and adding on

Lloris/Vorm/Pau

Walker/Trippier/KWP.....Alderweireld/CCV/Walkes.....Vertonghen/Wimmer.....Rose/Davies

Dier/Wanyama/Amos.....Dembele/Winks/Onomah

Lamela/Son.... ........Alli/Carroll/Edwards.....Eriksen/N'Koudou

Kane/Janssen/Harrison

It is clear as day that we are trying to build from the ground up.

I can respect the shit out of that. It makes it feel genuine/organic and I must say, I think we have some class in our youth ranks.

But is is a double edge sword? Will we drop back a place because we bled youth over pulling in tested products?

30% of me thinks we acted a little shortsighted this window, but lord that other 70% of me is like "I get to see Winks prove himself. I get to see Harrison prove himself. I get to see Edwards run past folks."

And you know what? I am ok with that.
That is the eternal struggle, but i think we have good enough players to make it work. We've all seen what can happen when a young player is given a proper go, and i'm not talking about 10-20 mins in a few games over a season: rashford, kane, sterling, alli, iwobi, all were given starts/sizeable minutes and have shown they can cut it.

I'm not saying our lads will definitely make it, but we'll never know until they get a chance.

Also, it seems people have quickly forgotten the impact the likes of Mason and Kane had when they first started getting games, the fans really connected with the team again and it was great to see. Would love to have that again.

Not to mention it will be a huge point in our favour when the next edwards or kirby is cominv through and see that they WILL get game time here if they work hard enough and are good enough.

I read a article from Poch stating that the main focus of the last month has been to get the players fitness up and that after the international break he would focus more on tactical setups and individualizing player roles/assignments.

Oduwa and McGee gone to Peterborough on loan, confirmed by club. Great move for mcgee, he needs games, can't help but feel this is the last move before Oduwa leaves us.

If the youth promotion plan involves leaving the door a little bit ajar for Winks and Onomah, then this seems to be the season in which we need to do it. They're not quite meant to be getting fragments like last season all through this one, and ending up in the same position next year.

If this is the plan, and we count them as the full, young squad members they've been used as this season, then leaving Dier and Wanyama to one side as our DMs, the numbers in CM and AM aren't too low - 9 players for 8 spots.

Sorry to those not interested but you can add two more to the Man Utd youth exodus. Will Keane & James Weir, both to Hull.

Can't work out how to post a tweet but there's a fella on twitter called @samuelluckhurst who has tweeted that Weir's departure is the 7th LVG debutant who has now been jettisoned by Mourinho as well as two who have been sent out on loan and not expected to come back. The last two seasons were an utterly pointless exercise for them.

If only I could be as optimistic as you that all this will come to pass.

The loans of Oduwa and McGee are short terms i think. Peterborough's owner is very active on twitter. Replied to a tweet asking if there were options to extend on the loams saying "and more" so looks like they have options to buy on those deals.

Also apparently Bryan Gunn gave Mcgee a glowing reccomendation to their owner.

Interesting, trying to work out how Gunn would know much about McGee. McGee hasn't been out on loan before and Gunn has been working for Norwich in one capacity or another for ages...so where did their paths cross?

tbh i really admire the use of youth by LVG last season, although his "tactics" such as playing ashley young as striker against us is a joke.
i would take fosu-mensah at spurs however can't see man utd selling anyone to us

I thought the rules around loans had changed and there were no short term loans anymore? You could only loan a player for a half or whole season.

Mourinho at it again... tearing down the prior managers attempts at a legacy

both of which, for me, makes Keiran McKenna's move to United U-23's even more 'odd'. In my opinion, of course.

It's a rebuild job so McKenna likely gets to help build an academy with his vision in mind.

As for Mourinho, I can't see McKenna minding too much as Mourinho likely won't last long enough to influence the players McKenna brings through in several year's time.
