I know the forum goes in bipolar cycles of panic and elation but I'm having a difficult time understanding the current panic.

We're clearing the wage bill and locker room of unneeded assets and attitudes faster than anyone else, we've already stocked up on a new defense (our largest problem last year), have potential stars coming through to the first team in bunches and haven't lost a single star player. Other than ManU and Pool (whose transfers could be viewed as overpriced panic buys, not unlike their last summer) no one has strengthened considerably.

With over five weeks left in the window, tons of cash and rumors of picking up some of our opponents' best and proven players, what exactly are we so worried about?

I don't think anyone is panicking, just showing worry at the players we have been linked with. Also, I don't think you can sat Liverpool's transfers are over priced, Milner & Ings both free (though Ings will cost close to 7m at tribunal) Clyne 12m all seem bargains and good buys that most Spurs fans would be happy with. The questionable buy is Firminho, who if he can replicate his form he showed in Germany, could turn out a great buy and a bargain too.

He said 'could'. And obviously it remains to be seen if Firminho and the like will prove their worth. Benteke is a proper forward but 32 million for someone as injury prone as that is also a risk.

The only thing I'm worried about is DM. Apparently Suarez isn't happening now which realistically only leaves McCarthy and he seems unlikely to me. Especially if Chelsea sign Stones and if we're in for Berahino then I'd be amazed if we signed McCarthy too. Don't see us signing both players as we're probably talking £35-40m.

Anyway, this doesn't really leave us with a good or suitable DM to come in and improve us. This is where people will argue this is why we signed Mitchell. But if he can pluck out some random DM we've never heard of from nowhere who walks into the side and improves us to a good standard then I'd be amazed. A good DM (I'd love McCarthy) is crucial but looking more and more of a concern

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Benteke is a good fit for them and that is a lot of money, but he hasn't yet signed and 3 of the other 4, look very astute signings and I think Spurs fans would be over the moon to sign them and they are just being down played because they went to Liverpool..

Out, Stambouli, Chiriches, Ade, Soldado, Townsend, Lennon, Carroll. Total = £50m?
In. Moses, Berahino, McCarthy. Total = £48m?

Maybe? Or we might get Cambiosso on a free.

I agree- there are tonnes of exciting young wingers/striker (thus I have no idea how we've ended up being linked with Moses) we could theoretically buy but there are not many DMs out there that are affordable/gettable and will improve our first team.

I doubt McCarthy is the only one left, he's just the only one we know about. Since Mitchell came in leaks about who our targets are have gone down quite a bit. We only know the odd few names the ITK can/care to divulge, and when you follow our transfers as closely as we do it might seem like options are running out. I'd guess that McCarthy is the preferred choice but is just one of a list of players. I think he'd be great too but I can't believe he's the only possible option remaining.

Love it when a deal is described as being "worked upon", it's as if Poch is sat at a pottery wheel, Mitchell behind him, building a DM out of clay.
Instead of us you know deciding on one and bidding for them.

I think the term 'sorted', in this context, implies a very high confidence that we've secured a player, on the cusp of doing so, or there's agreements in place to be confirmed at a future date.

To use the term 'sorted' in relation to just identifying a target doesn't really make sense. As it implies something far stronger than just identifying, which is what we'd absolutely expect the Club to be doing - something wrong with them if it was taking them up to now to 'identify' a target in a position of such need for so long.

used to describe a situation in which everything is correctly organized or repaired, or when someone has everything that is needed

So it's definitely, maybe fixed?

Pages of debate over what "done" means. Is it 2007 again? Who released mattjb?

Fuck the midfield, Harry needs a partner and i'm not talking about the blond he took on holiday either.

Weren't you the one saying we needed a DM badly, and that Schneiderlin was going to solve so many of our problems?

I am saying that of all the positions on the team lacking last season was a back up to Kane. A player like MS could obviously fill a major void, but it's unrealistic to think that Kane will bang another thirty odd goals in next season, be injury free or face no suspensions.

This is jasper on July 9:

Thats seems to be at odds with him talking about McCarthy as the DM who is "sorted".

Also says at the end of Jaspers paragraph the the overseas players are who one is referring to at the beginning (DM sorted and Second Striker)

To be fair to Jasper I think his McCarthy 'sorted' is down to the following:-

McCarthy wants us, or has even agreed terms in principle
He's our current plan A
Price is high but we have lennon as a bargaining chip (he has alluded to both of these)

Now maybe he is being naive in that with spurs the agreement of the fee is the crux of the deal, but then anyone reading his ITK (and taking his info in addition to other ITK and media) and expecting some imminent announcement is equally if not more naive IMHO.

What is to misunderstand ? Done means Done and clearly it is not done. Jasper has misled us either because of poor use of words or he misunderstood the situation on this possible deal.

I still hope the reason we haven't tied up Song is we haven't completely given up on either rabiot or the german prospects. McCarthy has been sounded out and is agreeable that's why he keeps coming up in ITK talk.

I'd take Hernandez up front because I think he can come on and turn home games where the bus is parked in front of the visitors goal- a huge problem last season- just two more home wins last season and CL would have gone all the way to the wire. But he don't play wide so then it would be Lamela and Townsend again for right side which does not inspire. Better a punt on Bera, I'd have thought.
