i think it could work with keane, always liked him playing off the striker.

attacking four 1 : Berbatov
...................Capel Modric Dos Santos

attacking four 2 : Bent
...............Malbranque Keane Lennon

mmmmmmmmmmmmmm tasty.

This is what I have been saying aswell, however does keane have the creativity/delivery required!?

Played behind a front 2 at Wolves but developed more into a striker but the more experience he gains dropping back might suit him, as hopefully experience would help him time his runs and pick the right passes. I think though there are better options for that role

Indeed, He has started playing that role for Ireland. I will see his successes their before I make a judgement

Keane was brilliant in a similar role for us against Blackburn at the end of last season. He came on and changed the game. Apparenlty he was also was excellent there in a pre season friendly against Birmingham when Berbs made his debut.

The question I would have with using Zokora and Jenas in a 4-2-3-1 (or 4-4-2 for that matter) is where would the leadership in midfield come from? This is one of the characteristics that we are currently lacking in and personally I am hoping it is something we are looking for in our purchase. I think CM along with GK are the two key positions to fill and we really need to get it right.

You can, but I am not sure Modric fills that role, GDS and Capel wouldn't either. Keane as one of the three would, but I still think we need a bit more in the team.

I agree with you, but all those are still young and have plenty of time to develop theis criteria. The problem is its really hard to find a "leader" please give me some realistic examples!

I think Modric will show leadership to a degree, he always seems to want the ball and takes responsibility for how the team play, I think he was Dynamo's captain. I do think we could do with more leadership though

Good to know that Modric was captain at Dynamo. I think him being a playmaker could help and he may be able to develop into that role for us. I am not saying it is easy to find a leader or that I have any specific names. It is probably preferable if they came up through the club or were at least purchased at an early age rather than being brought in. That said the right personality can still really make their mark. I like what I have heard from Woodgate since he has been at the club. I also think Bale and Gunter have pretty mature heads on their very young shoulders.

So...the two options ahead of the back 5 are (assuming we sign Capel, Dos Santos, a DM and keep Berbatov)....

---Jenas ---New DM

Dos Santos Modric Capel

------Berbatov--------

OR

Lennon - Modric - New DM - Capel

--------Berbatov - Keane---------

Means dropping Lennon or Keane depending on which one we choose. Of course if we don't get the players mentioned or keep Berbatov it doesn't matter.

Ultimately it's impossible to pick a system at the moment because we don't know who we'll have.

I think Modric might need to learn a few words of English before being made captain guys..

I wouldn't be surprised to see him deployed on the left, but not in a 4-4-2. He played there for Zagreb and Croatia.

For the last last last time.
a) Modric is not left footed
b) he's not a left winger he will play CM

Whilst that may be a valid opinion, it is not fact. I personally think he'd be a useful on the left with jenas a CDM and lennon/other filling out the rest of the midfield.

I believe that Modric will play in the centre whether we go 442 or 433

however, in a 433, if we wanted to follow the barca blue print, he could be on the left. the barca blueprint (which worked fine until this season) is that the two players wide of the forward cut in and play through balls, while any crosses that come in come from the fullbacks. the added benefit of this is that if the fulbacks are doing the crossing, the midfielders have that extra bit of time to make runs into the box and support the forward, because crossing to just one forward is usually a waste of time.

However, I only think we'd do any of that if we bough Giovanni, because I think if we got Giovanni we would play a 433 and he would be in the midfield 3, not on the wing, therefore pushing Modric onto the left. Then you put Capel (if we get him) on the right, try and get Jenas to impersonate Xavi, buy a defensive midielder and presto, we're mini Barcelona!

It works in my mind, don't take this away from me

surely it's about options and fluidity in the midfield, if you have got intelligent footballers who can play anywhere across midfield like (for arguments sake) Malbranque, Modric, Dos Santos, and A N Other (DM to sit) football is no longer about rigid, you stay there mentality, especially with the attacking nature of Fullbacks nowadays. i think Wingers (bar the Exceptional) will begin to fade from the game at the highest level, for wide players more like Malbranque, Hleb, Rosicky, Benayoun, the more creative types that will not remain in a fixed position if they can better effect the play.

And If Bale/Gilberto and Hutton/Gunter can provide crosses on the overlap then a leftie in midfield is not vital. we got fifth without a leftie didn't we
