If we sign these players we could have any formation from 4-2-3-1, 4-4-2 to 4-3-3, lets just wait and see what Ramos does at the start of the season, my feeling is he will use several depending on who we are playing and what tactics they are using.

i think Wingers (bar the Exceptional) will begin to fade from the game at the highest level, for wide players more like Malbranque, Hleb, Rosicky, Benayoun, the more creative types that will not remain in a fixed position if they can better effect the play.

This has been happening for years now, Van Gaal claimed years ago that traditional style wingers were getting faded out and I remember Overmars saying that when he plays for Holland that he didn't play as a traditional winger, more like a cross between winger and striker

.

And If Bale/Gilberto and Hutton/Gunter can provide crosses on the overlap then a leftie in midfield is not vital. we got fifth without a leftie didn't we

Indeed the scum have won the league on more than one occasion without a left foote midfielder

the phasing out of wingers is why i think that a 442 with two wingers could still be so effective and that lennon and capel on either side being fed by a playmaker like modric in the middle could really hurt teams. if defenders are used to playing against there all rounder types like hleb, steed, rosicky and even babel who persistently cut in and go down the middle, when they come up against players going round the outside they'll be caught out. also, many teams rely on attacking fullbacks for crosses because of my aforementioned barca blue print (which i still think we may revert to ourselves) and having purist wingers on either flank is a good way stop them bombing forward.

many times last season i saw Petrov (so highly regarded by some) quite easily marked out of a game by an average RB simply because he (the RB) was told not to venture forward, and concentrate on stopping Petrov. i think you can get away with one out and out winger but not two unless it's one up top. and then Modric could come into play in behind...

Wingers are certainly a dying breed. Assuming Berbs is gone and we buy a new shiny DM.....

..................... Bent ........................
........ Keane ................. Modric .......
.....................................................
..................... Jenas .......................
.....................................................
........... DM ................. Hudd ..........
....................................................
.. Gilberto ... King ... Woody ... Hutton ..
......................................................
....................... GK .........................

It'd give us as good a chance as anyone outside the top 4 of breaking into it. And hopefully out poor overworked defence would get some protection as well, which would be nice. Be even better if I could put Berbs in there come September, bring Dos Santos on for Keane or Modric against tiring opposition defences, and a fit Bale joining in the attacks down the left wing.

In all honesty, I have no clue whatsoever about what formation we will play. I have hundreds of bits of paper sitting around me with various written out, but I'm completely confused. Am certainly going to catch a couple of friendlies this summer, nothing like a cool drink on a summers evening in beautiful Leyton.

Hutton Woodgate

O'Hara

Bentley Modric Dos Santos Capel

Berbatov Keane Bent

Real Madrid style - defensive player from withing (even though said player might not actually be defensive) and slap loads of attacking players on!

It's interesting how everyone seems to be split on whether Modric will play left or centre. I'd start a poll if I could be arsed.

I think he'll play left, we'll buy a DM to partner JJ (Veloso:pray:), and Giovani will be rotated between LW, RW and up front.

--Lennon-------JJ----------Veloso-----------Modric--

----------------Berba--------Gio/Keane--------------

Looks sexy to me!

You know, everyone has Modric as the player slotting in behind the striker if we play a 4-3-2-1, but Dos Santos is more of a second striker than a winger. I'd rather play Modric out wide and Santos in behind the striker.

Me to. I dont think he's disciplined enough defensively to play on the wing in a 442, especially as Bale likes to get forward. Thats why I'd give him a semi free role behind Berba, with Modric and Lennon on the wings.
