There is your Modric replacement and a better one too. He is very mobile, reads the game well, excellent passer, quick with his feet and head, backtracks well, is not afraid to get his ass on the ground, and most importantly likes to be around the box. I just hope that he doesn't get sent on loan or even worse - sold.

I like the boy and he is shaping up well.
But to say he is a ready to go Modric replacement
does him no favours at this stage.
Would have benefitted from playing another year with the master.

:giggle: Oh, give it a rest. I mean, I want him to stay, but Jesus.

I have been following him since he has been 16 and always expected him to be on the fringes of our first team next year or this year with Europa despite people saying he isn't that great because he is 20, but imo modric is leaving at least a year to early for carroll to step in. He needs to get over that fear factor that he is a youth player and do what he is good at like he did on loan. when he plays for us he seems starstruck and doesnt impose himself though he has started to do this in preseason

He needs to spend a year in the gym 24/7 before he can even think about mixing it up in the premier league.

I thought he was a bit light weight when I watched him play in the Europa league last season, but seeing him in the pre-season friendlies, he looked much better. The thing about his style of play is that he doesn't allow to get tackled, so he doesn't really need to be that strong, he has plenty of stamina though.

Regardless of his skill on the ball, I'm not sure it's possibe to play CM in the Premier League without some degree of strength. Modders is small but he is in fact as tough as old boots and sturdily built; just look at the size of his thighs.

Carroll is tiny and looks like a boy amongst men at the moment. The good thing is that strength should come with age, whereas technique is something that has to be there from the start and he appears to have it.

There's a quote from Carroll himself where he says he tried bulking up but he felt he adversely affected his game.

Iniesta, Xavi, Pedro, Mesi, Silva, are all players who have a similar build. I think Carroll will go towards not letting another player near him rather than building muscle to handle the physicality of the game.

He's got a long way to go to be in Modric's league, but definitely along with Caulker, the best prospect we have produced for years.

Needs to fill out his frame a little, hopefully AVB's fitness bods will be making him a gym programme to get his core strength up.

Follow him on Twitter too, and he seems a very likeable, down to earth lad, with a good sense of humour.

But you have to bar in mind that the OP genuinely believes Modric is useless.

He's not bigging up Carroll as much as he's putting down Modric.

Here's the quote and article for anyone that's interested.

"I kept getting bullied off the ball and I did start to wonder," Carroll said. "But it's not a problem now. Last season I started to go to the gym but then felt sluggish on the pitch so I stopped doing that. I feel strong and not in a rush to get to the gym or bulk up."

I saw him and few times for Orient and was always impressed. Demanding the ball off the keeper in League One on boggy pitches gives you an idea of his confidence.

I'm very interested to see how he develops but don't think he is ready for the first team yet.

But that is all down to the programme he is on. A proper conditioning pogramme wouldn't see him add that much bulk, but just develop his core strength. Messi is tiny, but you don't see him pushed off the ball because he is strong in the core.

Yeah I agree, I was a tad worried when I first read this and thought "surely people at the club are monitoring this kind of thing."

Tiny players should try to develop speed off the mark and quick change of pace. That way he should clear markers more easily.

Yeah, me too - been banging on about him for a couple of years.
But ready for the first team? Now? Nah.

Someone sugested, elsewhere, that he could maybe make a good understudy to a new creative midfielder, which sounds about right. But he is not anywhere near ready to repace Modric yet.

I think he's ready to play a role in the squad this season. I would have him as a backup creative midfielder. We still need someone more experienced and proven at a higher level (someone like Moutinho).
