This is my first ever post. So, to give some perspective to my comments, I have supported my beloved Spurs since 1958, probably a longer time period than most contributors on this excellent site. I have seen many poor performances and results equally as bad as today. However, I cannot remember a manager so intransigent in his ways. What needs to be tried is obvious to most true supporters, and the changes necessary have been repeated often enough on this site. I have never belonged to the "get rid of our manager" campaigns. We must accept that all involved with the team do their very best. However, ALL must accept a share of the current lacklustre displays. I can only hope that we at least return to playing the 'Spurs way'. ( Yes, it does exist! ) It was Martin Luther King who said “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.” Yes, give AVB and his staff more time, BUT, if our playing style does not improve, I hope that AVB will be man enough to give another manager the opportunity to manage our beloved team. Failure is no longer an option. We need to move on from always mentioning our glorious past, and give our young supporters a future where they can taste the joys of watching football as it should be played. It was the great Pele who said "Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do". COYS

Thanks for your welcome. I will probably take your advice and not post again. But, after today, I had to say something. COYS UN ( Welsh for number 1 COYS !!)

Purely in jest, my friend. Feel free to stick around and add to your post tally. The board is a great place, but on match days when things don't go our way a lot of people lose perspective. I started watching Spurs back in the 90s so I have never experienced "the glory days". For me, despite the odd awful performance like today, these last few years have been the best I've ever seen for Spurs and I'm happy to witness them.

No, I don't want us to revert back to the mundanity of mid-table mediocrity, and I don't think we will, which is why I do fundamentally agree with you when you say AVB needs to start injecting some flair back into our side or else have the balls to step aside and admit it ain't working.

The way I see it - AVB was damn close last year and did well, all things considered. This year was always going to be a bigger challenge. I think he's so afraid to lose that he sets us up in the most conservative way possible, trying to win like it were a game of chess or some battlefield. Football is about risks sometimes, and AVB doesn't appear to be a risk taker. I was genuinely impressed last season when he went for broke and threw men forward after Ade got sent off at Arsenal, and we looked better for it, but since then I've yet to see him make as bold a move as that. In the past we've played some of our best football when we've taken risks, because we didn't have much to lose.

I'm hoping the silver lining on today's cloud will be in the form of a real reaction at United, perhaps sparking a run of form in a similar vein to that of Arsenal's last year. The will to fight from both the players and management at the club, and the will to take a few more risks, throw a few more bodies forward in the hope of scoring goals and playing attractive football, needs to be seen. If we don't see that next week, then I'm afraid we may never will under this manager.

*points at the new guy* You, you there, you seem a decent chap - have you seen Danny Rose at all?

If not, that's fine too, just log where you have or have not seen him in the appropriate thread, so we can keep track of where he is or isn't at any given moment (y)

Where he IS: http://www.spurscommunity.co.uk/index.php?threads/where-is-danny-rose.103435/

Where he ISN'T: http://www.spurscommunity.co.uk/index.php?threads/where-isnt-danny-rose.104051/

Welcome aboard, don't eat the custard in the fridge, that's one of Houdini's semen samples... yes, he knows it's not meant to be that colour. Or have a spoon in it.

And its at this point my lack of Welsh becomes apparent!

You're welcome but not sure what the second bit means.

Where you from mate?
As far West as you can get in beautiful Wales. Second bit translates to " a bad game today". I started following Spurs because , as a young boy , Cliff Jones was my hero. When I met him at the LANE, it was a dream come true. 1958 was also the year Wales did so well in the World Cup, only to be eventually beaten by Brazil. I visit the Lane as often as I can, but it is a ten hour return journey. Best wishes. COYS UN.

Croeso Coys un.

I was born in Tottenham and have supported Spurs all my life and watched them play from the '50s too and we've been very fortunate to have seen some wonderful football and players in our time. If you get around to reading some of my older posts, you'll see that I know Cliff well and also used to know many of the other 60s players and nothing has come up to the standard of those halcyon early 60s for me.

Today was a sad and humiliating day but it's not the end of the world and I live in hope of future glory. Supporting Tottenham is in the blood.

I'm in Wales too now but my spiritual home will always be White Hart Lane.

Welcome to the site! I hope You stay and post more in the future. It's good to read comments from someone who has been supporting Spurs so long time and has really experienced the best and the worst in our club's history. It gives us younger supporters some perspective!

Really loved your post. Spurs also in my blood. Is there any way I can send you a 'private message'? It would be nice to correspond with another life long supporter. I WILL read your other posts. Being retired, I now have even more time for Spurs. COYS UN.

There must be something in this.

I, too hail from Welsh blood, and my support goes back to 1966 having been born a couple of months after the Double.

I've definitely seen worse performances, and results, but it never gets any less painful.
