Not exactly miffed. Still a lot to spend on a player at that position. Even if he showed a lot of promise, it would be pretty easy to get burned or only come out even on that one.

Halilovic is the one who is worth a gamble.

Still don't know whether it was the Tin who didn't want the move (after Halilovic decided against the move) or if Spurs back out once they couldn't get Halilovic or Roma simply beat Spurs to him...

I think Tin just weighted out his options. At Spurs he saw Vertoghnen, Dawson, Kaboul, Caulker who all already played first team and def would be ahead of him for now. Add to that that they are all relatively young.

On the other hand Roma who are most likely gonna sell Marquinhos. So that leaves only Castan and Burdisso, who is 32, infront of him. If they dont buy a super star, he will have the same chances to impress as the new guy. Also considering that in the seconf half of the season Roma played almost half of their games with 3 CB's, his chances of playing time are much higher than with us. All in all a reasonable choice from his POV.

Add to all that other possible factros like the region and climate is more similar to croatia, if Pjanic stays he has at least on team mate who speaks the same language, and in general the italian league tends to form tactically good defenders etc

I beleive the ITK that the deal for both was close and that we agreed everything with Dinamo (confirmed by Mamic), but the players sadly just didnt fancy us :(

That's a re-hash of what was posted yesterday, but now Roma have confirmed it as well:

Still not yet 18 years old (his birthday is November 28), but with experience well beyond his years. Tin Jedvaj is what the French would call an "enfant prodige". This talented youth seems almost predestined. One thing is certain though; young players this good are rarely seen on the field at the professional level. His résumé shows over a dozen games played with Dinamo Zagreb’s first team as well as a goal scored against Cibalia. Just to make things clear, Jedvaj was born in 1995. In Italy, most players his age are preparing for the 2013/14 season in the Primavera league, but obviously Jedvaj is not your average player. A central defender with a strong physical presence (6’2” tall), yet blessed with the ability to elegantly dispossess his opponents. In his home country he has garnered comparisons to Paolo Maldini; it’s a lot to live up to, but this youngster is certainly not one to shy away from the challenge.

Well with Totti hinting at retiring at the end of this coming season and De Rossi looking at possibly leaving they're going to have a hard time keeping the fans happy. Marquinho won't be around too long either with the clubs that are sniffing around him. A signing like this isn't going to placate the fans in any way but Roma won't to show that they're looking towards the future.

Baldini gone and Roma continue to sign impressive youngsters... Interesting.
I am not sure whether you're one of those who from now on will blame the DoF for any failed transfer, like so many fans did with Comolli. Again, it's Levy/board that controls the money, not Baldini; so he can't offer the concerning players whatever he like to. The final work is with Levy.
It's far too easy to blame Baldini on this. As you must have seen, the president of the club even declared that the deal was finalized...so who really knows what happened. The goal posts seem to have moved after a deal was agreed.

No I'm not.

I just thought Baldini was largely attributed with the bringing in of highly rated youngsters at each club he was at. Was more of a musing; certainly not a criticism.

Maybe this was a case of Baldini working on this deal just before leaving Roma, then coming to us and when Roma couldn't agree a deal originally he decided he would be a good fit for us (assume we were looking at Halilovic on his own to start with). At the end of the day the player chose Roma.

Will be interesting to see if, seeing as Roma and Tottenham probably aren't too far apart in club-size etc and have a similar budget, if we battle it out for any more players in the coming months. Baldini may have had his targets at Roma that he thinks would also go well at Spurs.

That excitable croatian chap who guaranteed to me that we'd sign Halilovic and Jedvaj 20 pages back is going to wake up tomorrow with his balls in a vice.

A poster on another forum who is a big Roma fan and who I trust with any Italian media-related stories has said repeatedly that Jedvaj has been a Sabatini target long before we were linked. This of course does explain why we were so aware of him, but it doesn't mean that it was a Baldini pet signing that we failed on.

Baldini's role in the latest Roma stint was not the same as it ostensibly is now at Spurs or what it was back in his first period at Roma. Sabatini is the man in charge of recruitment.

Disappointing to miss out but I don't think failing to sign a 17 year old in a position we're well-equipped is as disastrous as some are making it.

I have a feeling if Spurs (i.e. DL/JL) had gone that extra mile both players would have been at Spurs right now. Maybe a rude awakening of Baldini.
