Also, since when is Bentaleb lightweight? I'd be shocked if he's under 6ft1 and while he may not be a unit, he's certainly not slight.

The cry is always for bigger, stronger, faster players and alas seldom for people who can play football, think quickly and pass the ball. The majority would always choose a Dembele type over a Modric type

Is true, but archaic and hopefully changing. The days of two destroyers in the middle in the Prem are being left behind, as the best way to establish balance through a more playmaking dimuitive type to provide movement alongside a designated destroyer.

A little bit late, but found some views on Carroll's performance against West Ham recently, from the PlanetSwans forum...

- TC's work-rate was hideous yesterday....I got tired just watching him. He was like some sort of bionic mole.....absolutely everywhere. I haven't seen a midfielder of ours run around like that in ages. At 22, his reading of where the ball was going to drop was phenomenal.

- His improvement since he's been with us has been superb. I think the Swans' style and philosophy just suits some players who are treading water with their clubs and they flourish with the Swans whereas they'd just sink without trace elsewhere. Now we've found one who has flourished and who, at 22, is going to continue to improve, we need to do what we can to get him permanently.

- I hope we are in serious negotiations with Spurs for him. Controlled our midfield today for most of the game, bar a 20 minute spell when they were on top. Lovely little player.

- It's a no brainer surely, splash the cash and buy him now. He looks equally good going forwards or back, he is perfect for the way play and can only get better. Please GM don't just use him as a sub, he has quality written all over him and certainly good enough to start every game. He's the new Joe Allen, only better. apols Joe.

- At first looked like a kid lost in a Center Parcs, but he seems to have suddenly come of age and looks like a future midfield gaffer. Could really be something special. Shows how football makes mugs of us all

- I thought carroll was excellent today, whenever we had a period of prolonged possession, he was running the show, he was very unlucky with a couple of through balls that didn't quite make it, much busier and energetic than Shelvey.

- positive, footballing intelligence, always looking for the ball. v much a "Leon" - with a cultured left foot and an eye for the killer pass

- no offence to any of our players present and past, more eager to make progress down the pitch. Classy player and personally I'd love us to sign him.

- Carroll has shown glimpses of his natural class before, but has often seemed to play within himself a bit, playing very safe. Today, you could tell he just thought, 'poppycock it, I'm just going to go for it and play my game'. He was much more involved that he usually is, demanding the ball, taking responsibility for making us tick, being that link between Leon, the defence and Gylfi, Bafe and the wingers.

Showed a great range of passing, great positioning and admirable technique. I was very very impressed with him today. Not perfect of course, but taken in the context of the game (the opposition/lacking a couple of star players), it was very promising. I wouldn't hesitate in signing him permanently.

He's quite lightweight in the tackle though in fairness, I'd be interested to see how many 'duels' he wins, I'd be surprised if it's over 50%

Edit: In fairness, just did a little comparison of players in a similar role above us in the league and he doesn't come off badly - but I think from tackles lost and fouls committed you can see he's a little bit lightweight, albeit he's played less games

I know football is fickle and he could have a bad game next. But these comments are more informative to me as they tell me how good he could be. At his best we know he can dominate a PL midfield that information is useful to us and it tells us we have a player. We just need to work with him and get it more consistent now. I know some people have admitted they judged too soon and again I too am going off too early but he really should not be written off. We have an unprecedented amount of top young players at the moment. I don't know any club right now at this level. Love these kind of comments thanks for posting.

Changed the stats to ave. per game. And other than number of tackles per game where he comes last. For those who don't click the link he comes second in every other stat (total duels%, fouls committed and tackles lost) to Carrick. The other players being compared are Matic, Flamini and Schneiderlin. Considering he his 5 years younger than the next youngest player that is bloody impressive and they are top players, and Carrick has been one of our best midfielder in the last 10 years.

As a side as I don't use squawka a lot. Is total duels % mean his win to lose ratio i.e. he wins 48.61% of his duels?

Carroll starts alongside Gylfi in Swansea's midfield today against Chelsea. Might mean a different role to the one he had against West Ham, may be asked to play a bit deeper in the position Leon Britton usually has. Tough game, good luck to him.

Assisted Oscar in first min apparently. Always going to be difficult. As I saw a Swans fan tweet. 2 up to, 2 small wingers and Gylfi and Carroll central against Chelsea is always going to get overrun

i haven't seen it but the ssn crew said it was a crap ball from siggy which didn't leave carroll with much chance.

Think Monk dropped a massive bollock with his tactics, they usually run top teams a lot closer than they did today. TBF though they were missing important players. Havent watched the game yet but im not sure we can really take anything from that performance in regards to Carroll.

Although, according to WhoScored he had more touches (81) than any other Swansea player, (9) more than the 2nd most; Gylfi (72). Only Fabregas (90) and Hazard (95) touched the ball more.

He had more passes (69) than any other Swansea player and only Fabregas (78), Matic (70) and Hazard (75) had more overall.

He also won 4 from 5 tackles attempted, only bettered from either side by Tiendalli (5 from 6).

Like i said i havent watched the game yet but from those numbers it doesnt look like he had a complete disaster.

What on earth was Monk thinking playing Sig and Carroll, with a guy playing ahead of them who was making his Premier League debut, against Chelsea?! Utter madness!

Wasn't flash for the second goal either based on what I have seen, got flat footed and didn't track his opponent instead chased the ball.

Total Duels is the % he wins but also includes aerial duels.

Bentaleb also makes the 2nd most interceptions per 90 out of these players.

On a side note, change Bentaleb to Mason, he comes out for top for tackles and duels %

Thanks. Including the interception stats it is remarkable how well he is doing. It confirms what I was saying in the Rabiot thread about how his stats look better than Bentaleb's due to league and team etc. I assume Rabiot's stats would therefore be better than those above and I doubt anyone would take Rabiot at the same price than any of those players.

Really impressive for Mason too, really have some gems. We really can't write our players off.

I have seen in the Tom Carroll transfer thread some people are happy to take 5mil for him. Really, ahve they not seen the development of our players. He may be turning 22 but he is England u21 captain. Even though I don't rate him Henderson is an example of a player who has been key to his team and develop. He is still one of our best passers. There are comments such as there isn't much more to their game, but it sounds like laziness as in this thread already we ahve shown he has improved the defensive side of his game. Bring him back and give him a chance

I got flamed for saying we could have done with Carroll as an option especially off the bench when we are chasing a game to keep the tempo up and break teams down.
