Just for debate I have highlighted the word skill out of your post. Now skill is clearly a subjective term but for me a skillful player would have the ability to beat a man in a one on one scenario. He would have a bit of trickery necessary to take him away from a defender.

For that reason alone I can't possible classify Lamela as a "Skillful" player and it's that one attribute that disappoints me the most about his signing. It might be my fault for buying into the hype in the threads at the time but I thought we were signing a tricky winger.

That said, Lamela seems to be finding his way in our side and I would say his best attribute is his one touch passing.

I disagree with your assessment.

I think most people would say Ozil is "skillful", yet Lamela has competed more successful take ons per 90 than he has.

That is not a good comparison at all. Different system, team and players. Ozil is head and shoulders above Lamela, and sometimes we need to accept that fact.

lamela does display tremendous ability to dribble at times but its not his primary attribute. I agree with you that we bought him expecting a greater ability to beat players. however to me, that doesnt say he isnt skillful. His one touch passing is quite the skill. his inventiveness is another. Skill isnt just dribbling or beating a man for pace imo. its more than that. those things are just types of skills.

The crowd expect so much from him still so he must really feel the pressure when he and the team aren't playing well which can't be easy. He's a bit of a Soldado for me, the crowd so want him to do well so when he does we'll really get behind him but equally when he doesn't he'll feel the pressure.
He's certainly having a much better season, is fouling less and creating more but for me the most frustrating thing is for example that breakaway vs Anderlect where he pretty much ran into the player and then dived/fell-over. As Clive Allen said in commentary that is where you need your little turn of pace or bit of skill to get away from the man and have a shot etc but because Lamela is so one-footed and also sometimes isn't too sure what he's going to do next the defenders read him easily.

Those situations are what you pay the big bucks for players to beat the man and at least test the goalie, he has a lot more to his game but if he can start improving in that area we'll have a very decent player.

His link up play with Eriksen is becoming almost telepathic. He is much better when CE is on the pitch.

Slowly building something.

I think this season is all about Potch starting to get his ideas across to a group who care and suit his style of play and make us more solid. Next season hopefully Lamela, Eriksen, Son etc will really click and we'll still be solid but also start to play even better more exciting stuff.

It wasn't a comparison. A poster said you need to able to beat a man order to be skillful, I was pointing out that Ozil beats less players than Lamela, yet I don't think anyone would argue that he wasn't skillful. I agree that Ozil is head and shoulders above Lamela.

In you comment about different systems, Arsenal dribble past players much more than we do (14.4 per match compared with 9.5).

Lamela is a bit crap in many ways. However in a flowing sequences of moves his passing can be exquisite. He'd like to take a man on...he can't: no acceleration. He can tackle however - and you can't argue with is work rate. I like him on the pitch he is a really interesting player.

Absolutely spot on, my thoughts exactly - if they can work on his accelaration, a burst of pace over five to ten yards, he will be a stunning player. Harry Kane worked on it and look at him now.

Lamela has ability, just needs to be working on his legs and ball control at speed. Also as his Rabona goal showed he can do the unexpected, and this is what he needs to build on, as defenders will be unsure and commit to either a foul / bring him down freekick edge of box, (CE to take) or a penalty. So basic mental attitude he needs is confidence, calmness (of latin temperment) and quick thinking.. this last one has been shown a few times, in that when he does things fast and without thinking he is unplayable...
