Great second half performance and we deserved to win it only for shit decisions from Jon Moss (yet again). Decent result but in terms of top 4 that was a must win, I can't see us finishing top 4 this season now but fuck it, Capital One Cup is the most important thing this season.

I'm not sure that I agree with that. Perhaps I can give you a different perspective.

That was a decent result against one of the likely top three. You can look at it as two points dropped, but even after it we are still well within touching distance of the top four.

Even if we lose the Chelsea game (and I'm not sure that we will), we will still be in touch of the fourth place.

None of our rivals is convincing ATM.

We will be just over half way in the season, but will have played Chelsea, Citeh and the Goons away (probably THE three hardest games, for us at least, in the season). We will also have played United, Liverpool and Chelsea at the Lane. So, we will have, in just under half a season, less games against the five clubs technically above us than in the first half. Of the games left, we have Liverpool and United away, and Liverpool appear to have regressed while we are improving so a trip to Anfield may not be quite as intimidating as it may have done just after their visit to the Lane, and while OT is not an easy place to go and United are improving, we are improving ourselves and have a good recent record there so all hope is not lost. As for home games, we have the Goons and Citeh. The Goons have hardly been an all-conquering, dominant side this season, especially away, and it is the NLD - surely we will have a good chance in that one. And that leaves Citeh, and even if we concede them favourite status we will at last have home advantage and, therefore, a chance.

As mentioned in above, we are improving. Defensive stability looks to be paying off. The players are fitter - and this is giving us an advantage at the end of matches. In recent matches, our attacking play has looked far more fluid, we have some exciting young attacking players who are improving and relationships, as at the back, look to be developing. The players look to be buying into, and adjusting for, Pochettino's system.

Where we really need to improve is in central midfield, the one area of the pitch more than any other. As I said in the last match-thread, I really do love having home produced players in midfield, and I believe they both have great futures in the game. But neither together nor paired with any other of our central midfielders, are Bentaleb/Mason dominant enough ATM. But they will improve and hopefully we will sell some of the deadwood and get a player in there that will with more experience and the drive to take games like the scruff of the neck (ahem, Schneiderlin was sent off today), with our younglings to learn from and develop alongside.

Honestly don't see for top 4 anywhere near as clear-cut as you. And see today's result as a good, and hard-fought point on the way to it. We are a fitter, better integrated, more confidence team with individually improving players and with improving partnerships/relationships at various areas of the pitch. We will still be in a decent position just outside the top 4 even if we lose to Chelsea and with the majority of our harder matches out of the way, and the ones left being ones were we look more capable of getting a result. And Poch will presumably be more than aware of the need to bulk up the midfield as he really pushed for Schneidlerin in the summer. Not saying we will do it, and we certainly aren't a shoe-in, but I wouldn't give up on it just yet, either. That said, a good finish to the season and a cup win would do it for me - Europa, for me, or CC and Europa double :)

We were playing in their half and forcing them to struggle to move out from their half. We certainly weren't "dominating," but between the two sides at that time we were the safer.
Agree defo. In fact LVG subbed 2 back players with more reliable players in Smalling and Shaw as manure were on the back foot when we were attacking.

Disgraceful really.
Can united muster one more chance?
Still time for a united winner?
Both said in the last 10 mins when we were clearly on top,
Getting pissed off with the United Liverpool biased on sky/bt /media, getting beyond a joke now these pricks are supposed to be impartial
I also thought he gave mom to lloris so it looks like they were all over us and lloris was the saviour. He didn't have a save to make second half and mata was the standout player

To say the subs MoPo made were ridiculous is an understatement. United were putting on defenders and we take off our joint top scorer and our most dangerous attacker who minutes earlier was clean through and should have got Young sent off. Fucking cowardly.

The thing about Dembele is he doesn't give away the ball. Now whilst his caution leads to criticism, in big games like this where the midfield is under pressure then he is useful in allowing us more of the ball.

In addition to that he's a big fucking unit who offers more defensively.

Mason and Bentaleb may be more inventive, but that comes at a cost, in misplaced passes.

I want to see Poch utilise the midfielders at the right times. Against packed defences we don't need to keep the ball as much, but in games like today where it is clear United will dominate the middle then Mousa needs to be there.
agree with you but the worry today was what the 2 cm do without the ball and with carsick and Rooney in there I think poch wanted a guy to mark, tackle and get in there faces. That's what stambouli was put in to do today

The fourth spot is anybodys right now and your right to say its not a closed door, but i must confess i think We again will fall short.
Despite a much better second half we never looked like scoring apart from masons effort but Utd should have been three or four up by half time which would have made it irelavant for us.
As for schniederlin we wont get him due to us not wanting to go over ten million let alone close to thirty for him, same as we need a top notch striker to compliment Kane but again we will only get a cheap option probably someone young.
Our best chance of success is the CC as you mentioned but Chelsea will be the likely opponents which we will struggle to beat something we will see wednesday.

Surely Pochettino can see we have no grip of the midfield whatsoever.

If he doesn't change this tactically now we will lose this, its only a matter of time.

Go 4-3-3...bring Dembele on for Townsend. I'd also bring Lamela on for Chadli....and Lamela and Eriksen can flank Kane as the three forwards.
You and many others see zero goal opps from any other player but Townsend and you want to take him off to put on a DM?

I thought Townsend was pretty atrocious today, Ashley Young was different class to him both offensively and defensively.

I wouldn't use the description "atrocious," but he was disappointingly poor today. Aside from a few good crosses, his passing was back to woeful, and he did give up on the ball-carrier far too easily on occasion.

All I will say is that we didn't get the result we deserved. We should have won that game. Yes united were on top in the first half although we had a couple of chances too. But second half I thought we dominated, as shown by Van Gaal's substitution of 3 defenders. We were also denied a penalty.

I think Andros is working harder than I've ever seen before from him, to be honest.
Pretty standard performance from AT today. He was not great especially 1st half when he was suffering a bit (but thankfully only a bit) from Lamela walk about disease but he helped the team keep it's shape and it was not the shambles it has been in the last 2 games when Lamela played.
