Winks and Ndombele are a good double pivot combination. Both pass quickly, sharply and forward and both are good at getting themselves out of tight spaces.

I think that will probably be the starting combination, on paper looks our best bet and hopefully can soon be firing on all cylinders.

Will be interesting to see how far into contention Skipp's pre-season will get him, so far I think he's been by some distance the best performer in the middle of the park.

No need to overly comment on the players who are known quantities and will be main players come what may, they all produced what you’d expect really.

Positives

  • Foyth looks more than comfortable with the defensive side of right back, and played some good forward passes.
  • Tanganga looks ready, which is something of a surprise. If Foyth is to be a mainstay at right back then this kid is far too good for us to go spend money on a fourth choice.
  • Skipp likewise is ready. Mobile, strong, comfortable on the ball, reads the game well and pretty purposeful. In fact, with him and Winks as the deep lying options, and with Sissoko and Ndombele as our box to box options, we are looking strong at CM. Dier’s versatile will mean he’s still useful, but I fear for Wanyama.
  • Parrott... like with Skipp and Tanganga, he justifies not signing a forward/ not renewing Llorente, he already seems to good to have his minutes eaten up by someone who is at best adequate. That said, if Llorente was happy to be a purely ‘break glass in case of emergency’ player then Troy could definitely benefit from having him there.
  • Lamela, very sharp, very purposeful, but we’ve been here before.

Negatives

  • Lamela came off and with him so did our press.
  • Walker-Peters, while not bad, seems like his ceiling is lower than we’d hoped.
  • Georgiou will not be the first Cypriot to take the premier league by storm.
  • Nkoudou isn’t going to attract any half decent buyer. Maybe Vincent can put in a good word in Mexico.

All in all, lots of reason for optimism. You can see where the players most linked right now will improve us, but likewise there’s little point signing squad fillers at the expense of developing some very good young players.

If I were Bale I’d be tempted to wait for Zidane to be fired.

RM were poor and some of their players look as though age has caught up with them.

Agreed. I’m actually very calm about CM with Winks, Skipp, Ndombele, Sissoko, with Dier as our shut shop option.

If we're playing 4-2-3-1 like we did today, then Foyth looks a handy option at right back. If we play a diamond, 4-3-3 or with wingbacks then I wouldn't be too sure about him.

Looked good from the small part I saw.
Can he play either side at CB? Would be good if he could cover Jan if needed
Tanganga is best as a CB only and if you want a CB who can cover LCB then Brooklyn Lyons-Foster is the best at that.

Indeed. He might be a Corluka type where he can shuffle forward getting involved as and when and just hold down the spot, but he will need a Son/Moura playing in front of him to provide the width. If he's expected to play as a flying wingback the kids got no chance.

Any time he gets the ball you can tell he's a super footballer, but his fitness is an issue in these early days and he has some work to do. By 25 mins he was gassed. Some are saying that it's just his running style, but no. You could tell he's struggling to make high intensity run after run after run and towards the end of the half was barely getting into a trot and our midfield started getting very open down his side as he chased shadows.

The raw ingredients are there, but he's got some work to do to catch up with the rest of the squad.

He played well when he was on I thought. But he’s going to have time to get up to speed. I said as much before we signed him. He’s playing proper football now week in week out. It’s so much more different to the French league and working with us under Poch. Players probably don’t realise it until they get here. There’s no passengers. If Poch doesn’t think he’s fit enough to play, he won’t play him. He’s not afraid of price tags.

He will need time so let’s hope he’s given it.

Shout out for Skipp.
Some good tackling
and the through ball for Dele was class.
Could/should have been more
Parrott unlucky
and Navas made at least 3 top top saves.
3-1 would have been fair.
Pleased that Poch playing the youth paid off.

Hope we see more of the first half shape. Very Man city like with a fluid front 6 and more solid full backs.

I agree. Unfortunately people make up their minds about a player they dont fancy, even before a ball is kicked, and rate them down, even though their individual performance would dictate otherwise.

I have always liked Nkoudou but he was never given a real chance to really see if he was good or not. I'm not a fan of one game and make a decision. For me he needs 10 games in 20 to show if he got it or not
