Don't know how well 3-5-2 will work in EPL, but you need the right blend of players for it. I think United lack a top quality centre back to control the back 3, and a right wing back to own that side.

Love the formation though, Juve and Napoli have rocked it for a few tears now.

LVL played 3-5-2 with the Netherlands in the World Cup, but will change it to 4-2-3-1 if needed...

Both formations getting to be quite popular.

Well he didn't play with that formation today. Looked more like a 4-4-2 than anything. Young at left back is ridiculous. He wouldn't even suit a wing back role. LVG needs a fair few players to make a 3-5-2 work. Hell, he needs a fair few just to make United work!

Started with 3-5-2 and then changed it at halftime.

Was clearly three at the back mate, with Blackett on the left. Young was totally unwilling to attack his man, the United fans must have been v disappointed with him. They look well short at the back.

Well he's doing it wrong then, lol. Whoever was meant to be the right wing back was so far forward that Jones was playing right back. It looked to me like Blackett and Smalling playing centre back. I think it was Januzaj out on that right hand side. To play such attacking players like Januzaj and Young as wing backs in a 3-5-2, if that was the case today, is a bit poor. Then again, they're pretty desperate for players right now and have a thin squad.

United don't have the players to give the formation justice. It could become more popular in the next few years, but its a much more difficult tactic to implement compared to the nowadays standard 4231. I think if anyone wants to use this style they either have to go out and sign big money players who are capable or put it on the back burner and develop youth into such structure.

It's very difficult to play this system due to the frantic pace of the english game

The wingbacks will be knackered most of the time

most teams they will play will only operate with 1 striker in the Premier League. That means there is always going to be a spare central defender without much to do. Obviously that means you're losing that player somewhere else on the pitch. It was a fine formation when teams play 2 up top and I think thats why it evolved in the late 90s but now when teams either play 4411 or 4231 I can't see how it will work out. I await someone with great tactical nous to tell me!

I said that before they lost Saturday btw.

I don't think it's a bad formation per se but I think it's better that a team switches to it mid game because it can catch the opponent's off guard. I think if you're gonna start with 3-5-2/5-3-2 then you need to have great players, the problem for Utd is that they don't have great players. They need defenders comfortable with the ball at their feet and excellent at playing and passing out from the back however on Saturday Once again the glaring downfall of the system in the first half was evident. Time and time again the defence had the ball but the two midfielders are surrounded by 3 Swansea midfielders and couldn't find the space. Meanwhile the wing-backs were often covered by two Swansea men. Inevitably that meant the ball was launched forward with rather blunt effects. They faced problems getting the ball forward because they were always outnumbered in the centre of the pitch and that will always be the case until they have the players who are adept at playing this formation.

The 2 CBs on either "side" should push forward and support their wing-backs whenever possible. In defence they're there just as much (if not more) to close the gaps that inside-forwards coming up from the 3 behind the 1 look to exploit, rather than all marking a striker.

When it's done properly it works well, Juve have spent 3 seasons being dominant playing it because they have a pretty much perfect selection of players to do it. Man United, at the moment, need work.

I'd say Juve have the CBs & CMs to play it, I don't think Man Utd do.

Spot on there Ribble. Barzagli and Chiellini are usually the right and left centre backs respectively and you often find them playing the role of defensive full backs when Juve are caught on the break and the wing backs are up the pitch. It buys the wing backs time to get back, and they must track back. Asamoah and Lichtsteiner will do this as they're hard working and have bags of energy. Bonucci is in the middle to mop things up, deal with the target men and when playing the ball out from the back he'll bring it forward in an almost sweeper like fashion whilst the other two close the gap. The 3 man defence, as well as the wing backs, constantly shift in the game according to the attacking situation Juve are in.

I've enjoyed watching Juve use this tactic more than any other in my years as a Juve supporter. It's something that works so well in that league with the types of players Italy produce. Not sure if it could work so well in the Premiership as it's such a quick, physical game. The play is switched about so quickly and men are dragged out of their positions a lot more. You really need hard working wing backs who can play equally as good as wingers or full backs, as well as centre backs who are tactically disciplined as well as technically sound. An incredibly hard blend to find.

Not just that, they need to be intelligent(I mean George graham esque defence)

When the winger attacks the space behind the winger but out wide the 3 have to work and move together to quell the danger and the midfield and wing backs need to get back. As soon as the defender goes off on himself and the other CB's don't react, alarm bells should be ringing. There will be a huge gap between the defence where the striker and winger would attack and if the teams have midfield runners they will be outnumbered

One of the key components for 3-5-2 is pace, because everyone needs to get the fuck back when a team is trying to hit them on the counter

If I were a Man Utd fan, I'd be quite alarmed at how much prep went into 3-5-2 in pre-season only for LVG to abandon it totally at half time.

By his own admission LVG used 3-5-2 with the Dutch as he thought the defence was weak so you would assume that is his logic for using it at Man Utd, be interesting to see how signing Rojo affects the formation as he would seem most suited to the LCB role in a 3-5-2
