Not the most excitable celebrations I must say. Can't blame him though. He must be baked.

It's like he was expecting the line judge to not call it and it took a moment for him to realise that it had actually gone out. Watched it during breakfast this morning and the quality of the tennis even after hours of playing was absolutely top drawer. Great result for Murray, really pleased he's managed to get the win his ability deserves. Think he'll win quite a few more now.

Okay, I was in bed. What happened ....

Ooh look!

Seriously - great commentary by you guys on here through the match! I was getting nervous reading it all! I'm looking forward to watching the (endless) Sky replays.

And bloody well done Andy. Finally we can forget Fred Perry.

He will win more. He's was too good not to before, and now he knows he can.

I am now sat at work completely fucking drained after watching that amazing final.

So pleased for Murray. I knew he had it in him but even I was getting worried after Wimbledon that he might be one of those athletes that is great but never wins a big one.

Well done Andy, deserved win... Novak is a fighter and in some respects i am glad he made it tough, this is very much a deserved first slam win!

I went to bed when Murray lost the 3rd set as being in Germany 01:30 was late enough! Glad to see i woke up to him as a winner.

So many people didn't like him as he seemed grumpier or destined to lose, but they talk crap and Murray always had it in him. He is playing at a time when the top 4 men (of which he is deservedly amongst) is possibly the best in history. To win is testament to his ability and his work ethic.

Even if he doesn't win any more (and I believe he will), he is still and always will be a winner.

Savour the moment Andy, you deserve it.

What a summer for GB sport, will the football teams manage to win tonight to keep it going?

:) Just about keeping my eyes open after 3 hours sleep.

What a way to win it. Djoko really turned it on to make it 2-2. He got the break with Nadal and Fed being out but I think he would have taken them anyway they way he was returning last night.

Well done Andy.

It was a pretty special final. It started off very slow and mistakes from both players - due to the conditions I imagine. But the match just slowly burst in to life and was the best tennis match I have seen. I didnt watch the Federe v Nadal final from a couple of years back which apparently was awesome so not sure how this one compares.

What I will say though is like football and cricket - night time sport is brilliant.

The finest game I ever watched was this one between my all-time favourite Borg v his Lithuanian friend Gerulaitis, sadly no longer with us as he died in his sleep in 1999 aged only 40 from carbon monoxide poisoning from a faulty gas heater. This was the incredible 1977 semi-final. It still takes my breath away to watch the way these two played against each other that day.

Enjoy, it's beautiful tennis from both men although the amazing Borg was always going to win.

I was there that day, Cosmic, with my dad. A fantastic match, and we gave them a standing ovation from the moment the last ball was hit until they disappeared off court. It was only then that the umpire could announce the final score!

What's more the other semi-final was between Jimmy Connors and a young qualifier called John McEnroe. Connors won in 4 sets.

It was a good ticket to have!

You were very, very lucky to be there. Have you noticed that Borg has got sexier and better looking as he's got older?

I have! :)

  1. Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson on fellow Scot Andy Murray's US Open triumph: "I'm really proud for the boy. The hard work and his progress, he's really top player. When he really needed to he showed it. That was a real test of a champion for me.
"It was a privilege [to be at the match]. I love tennis, I love watching tennis and to be involved tonight was a really special moment.
"It was more nerve racking than a Premier League match. I'm usually in control of my own situation but I wasn't in control tonight."

There were plenty of places to watch it on line last night most with top drawer streams, so I intended going to bed but in the end watched it all. Some of it was really excellent. great to see one of Murray's opponents struggling with muscle and leg problems for once! Well done that Scottish British one! ;)

What a year of Sport and who for BBC Sports Personality of the Year? Can it be shared between 5? I wouldn't like to choose.

I wasn't talking about the immediate reaction so much. That seemed normal to me. It was the aftermath that was noticeably muted considering he'd just won his first grandslam. All grimaces, no smiles. He was out of it though and explained things somewhat by revealing that his toenail had been ripped off on one of the final points. Then again perhaps he's been taking tips on how to celebrate Lendl style, lol

This Lendl situation the whole he doesnt smile business. I dont get it. i have a lot of sympathy. Im not that smiley a person but doesnt mean im not happy or depressed or angry or upset etc just not a real smiley person ALTHOUGH I do laugh a lot etc. and I would have been smiling in my players triumph had I been in Lendls shoes.

God damn. Work today was such a struggle but it was worth it.

I remember watching Queens 7 years ago when he made his debut,. Since then Ive gone from thinking he was a sure thing for a slam, to thinking he might not do it after so many body blows. But what was never in doubt, was that he had the talent to win a major. He has finally reached the holy grail, and the way he done it was just incredible. He deserved it without a doubt, to beat a grand slam champion in 5 sets of pure drama and tension is just about the most epic way you can do it. He can definantly win more now, and aim for no.1 spot. But it aint going to be easy with Fed, Rafa and Novak around, not to mention players like Del Potro, Tsonga and co. What a great time for mens tennis and we as fans have alot to look foward to.

Congratulations Andy Murray.

Hats off to Andy Murray that was an epic win last night. It's easy to think that tennis players aren't tough as it's a non-contact sport, but after that five hour marathon and hearing about AM losing a couple of toe nails during the game you can see just how strong and tough these guys have to be.
