Michael Vaughan has resigned as England captain. Paul Collingwood has also resigned as One Day skipper. Who should replace them?

Strauss? As with Vaughan, he's struggling for runs so would be under that pressure from day one.

Collingwood? As above, just quit as One Day skipper so hardly likely to get the gig.

KP? Not experienced enough for me.

Flintoff? 0-5 Down Under.

I'd give Rob Key a go as he'd get into both Test and One Day teams. His record at both formats stands up as a player alone but he's also got the added bonus of captaincy experience.

Honestly although I wouldn't agree with it I think KP will end up getting the job. It will probably end up ruining him as a player as well.

As for the other candidates I honestly don't think there are any. You mention Rob Key and as good a captain as he has been for Kent I am not sure he can make the step up.

Maybe there might be a couple of guys on here that follow the county scene more than I do might know of some hidden gem that could do the job.

Nidge, you could say that about any candidate really. Key has already played 15 test matches with an average of 31, which although admittedly isn't great, isn't the worst either.

With not many Test matches to go until we try to regain the Ashes, i'd favour him against the other candidates as I feel he's actually one of those cricketers who has improved with age both with the bat and with his captaincy and IMO a huge pointer to the way the selectors will be thinking is the fact that Collingwood has gone too. I think the new guy will lead us in both formats of the game. Key can do that.

The fact that I live in Kent, we have a mutual friend and that I have actually played with him in a charity match has no bearing on my bias

I was wondering if there was a touch of bias involved.

Graham Gooch. Or Bryan Robson.

Seriously though I can't understand why Vaughan has stepped down. He's the best candidate. His only problem right now is form and that weird selection of Pattinson over Tremlett and Broad.

Pieterson is not ready yet and I would also go with Key, even though his previous experiences with england didn't go too well on the batting front.

That was an incredible press conference earlier from Vaughan and it gave me watery eyes as well as the man himself! His great leadership abilities will be sorely missed and as much as Pietersen is a great batsman, has he got the nous to make the best use of out what we have, which at the moment is fairly limited? We'll see. I just hope that KP's batting style isn't restricted by the additional pressures as we don't need more negativity amongst the ranks!

It's easy to forget that Vaughan was ranked as the No. 1 batsman in the world after his phenomenal set of innings down under in 2002-3 and that's the tragedy, his batting ability has declined beyond belief over the past two to three years.

Cheers Vaughany for the memories!

KP is the man. You can't NOT give it to him. That would affect his performance even worse than giving it to him. He'd know that there was nowhere more to go.

So, he's got a big ego. Not sure why people think that the secret is to tame it. What it needs is direction and channeling. Ideally Vaughany could act as a mentor for him after this series.

Frankly, there's no one else. Rob Key was practically crying on the outfield when I saw him at the MCG 4 years ago. If you can't handle getting called fat by a couple of Aussie yobs you ain't the right material to be England skipper.

Alister Cook for me, I know he is young, but so was Greame Smith, and look how he turned out. There are no other options unfortunatly. It will be the ruin of KP should he get the job.

To listen to many observers, I think 'the ruin of KP' is exactly what they want.

Good shout with Cookie, though. Was a successful skipper for England Youth if I recall correctly.

Not so much. I'm talking more about seeing otherwise smart folk like Alec Stewart and Aggers lay into England's most talented cricketer for having the temerity to attempt to entertain the crowd at the same time as scoring runs.

I'd go for Cook for the tests and KP for the one dayers with Flintoff as vice captain for both.

MV's response to Aggers before the last test was classic, and quite right, TMS has been getting steadily worse since the great Jonners died, Blowers and CMJ are good the rest are poo!

Strauss is the best person for the job, but then there is a question over how secure his place in the side is.

I personally don't think who the captain is, is that important that he should be guarenteed a place in the team regardless of form... I would rather choose the best 11 players for each game and then have the person best suited to the job within that 11 be captain, and at the moment that would be strauss
