Whether it be a 442 or 4231 or 451 or whatever Rafa plays the same way regardless of formation

In a 442 when he plays upfront he drops deep in search of the ball and leaves his strike partner isolated - when he plays on the right of the 4 he leaves the flank exposed giving the oppo huge space to exploit ( yesterday was a normal example) - if you put him in the middle you have to shift Modric our best player out of position

So IMO he only really fits in a five man midfield which can make up for his lack of positional responsibilty - trouble is with this is that i share other posters concern here that we can score enough goals

I know on this site its deemed illegal to critcise VDV (one poster says i dont deserve to go to WHL ) however VDV does pose as many problems as he creates - on the plus side are his goals, assists and experience whereas on the negative side are the defensive problems and the effect on other players

If VDV could be disciplined in his approach to where he plays on the pitch then he is a massive asset but when he ignores his duties and just plays in a 'free spirited way' it causes issues for the team

His 'fitness' issues i think are mostly caused by the fact that he runs around like a nutter chasing the ball and konks out after an hour - i would love to see his yardage stats as i reckon he would achieve others average in an hour

Bottom line is to play him is to set up the team around him and that to me makes it very difficult to get the best out of Modric

And for you stats guys - since when was passes a measure the quality of attacking players? Maybe Defoe should drop deep, ignore his strike duties and get involved ina few pretty triangles on the half way line - his pass stats would be much better so he would obviously be a much better player wouldnt he? I assume Owen and Lineker were crap as well

Sell VDV lol, funny people
Why not if we get a profit. Would your boss keep you if you only worked a half day every day. I gave reasons for getting rid. Gimme your reasons for keeping him and dont say because he's a good player. It takes more than that to make a team.

How about you set aside the huge bias you have against Defoe when making a post. Yes, VDV gives more to the team in terms of assists and goals, but that doesn't mean you need to take the opportunity to have another snide dig at Defoe.

The message I was replying to said: "He will score more than Defoe, create more than Defoe and see more ball than Defoe", so I was giving the stats to back up the latter point.

Parker, modric, Sandro, Ade and Bale all have to play when fit IMO.. so Defoe, Lennon and VDV are the choices depending on the opposition and formation.

A resonably moot point considering the likley hood one or more will have time out from knocks or suspensions. Glad we have depth and flexibility.

Defoe has 4 goals to VDV's 3 and 5 assists to VDV's 2 and of course he'll see more ball as he insists on playing 2 yards in front of the back 4 and demanding the ball.

So we get rid of player who has 90 caps for Holland and keep him over a player who cannot get into the current England squad.

What has getting into the England squad got to do with anything, also who are you referring to? Finally on current levels of slothfulness do you think CApello would entertain VDV if he were English

4 goals in 3 games for us against the Goons and I believe he scored a few for his previous clubs when the goons were a better side than they are now.
We should play him wherever he wants to play.

VDV is easily our most creative player in the final third and he scores a load of goals........what's not to like about him?

Our squad is perfect for this:

Friedel

Kaboul ............... King

Walker .................................................... Bale
Sandro

Parker .................... Modric
VDV

Defoe ....... Adebayor

Absolutely, there is no reason why we shouldn't try this system at home against weaker opposition.

He's a bone idle prima donna, compounded by the fact that he has the fitness level of a darts player.

How anyone can heavilly criticise a player like VdV is beyond me. He's a world class player that has truly embraced Spurs and also the NLD after banging in 4 goals against them and celebrates like a Spurs fan when he scores against them.
He was the reason we even finished 5th last season, because without his goals we would have been firmly in mid table. Not only is the guy one of our best players he should be captain when King isn't available. His fitness levels are low because he came back early from a hamstring injury that should have kept him out longer. He was even pissed off at not being in the Europa squad and who really wants to play in that?!?! Rant over.

It looks pretty but we would never solidly set up like that though, it would always essentially be a 4-4-2 with Modric on the left, Sandro + Parker central with VDV on the right drifting in.

There's no doubt Van De Vaart's a class player, definitely in my strongest Tottenham 11. His best position is off the striker (in the hole). Never should he play in wide positions unless 100% fit.

Your team is crazy.

It looks pretty, but no.

Expect to get some abuse, but here goes anyway. Get rid of him for as much as possible. Good player, but just wont fit into the team, which requires everyone else to be mucked around to accomodate HRH. I also think Mod and him cant play in the same team.

You could be right here.

I like VDV but for me at the moment it's between him and Modric to play as the central attacker of the three behind Adebayor with a more balanced player needed for the right-sided role who is more natural on that side.

seems like folks have forgotten the impact rafa had in keeping us in contention last season? need to stop getting above our station were not man utd who can can discard this class player and that class player, we've been subjected to watching shite like crouch for so long that when folks like rafa roll up at the lane you should think how lucky you are to witness quality like the arsenal fans are now finding out with fibreglass and nasri gone.
