Whether it be a 442 or 4231 or 451 or whatever Rafa plays the same way regardless of formation
In a 442 when he plays upfront he drops deep in search of the ball and leaves his strike partner isolated - when he plays on the right of the 4 he leaves the flank exposed giving the oppo huge space to exploit ( yesterday was a normal example) - if you put him in the middle you have to shift Modric our best player out of position
So IMO he only really fits in a five man midfield which can make up for his lack of positional responsibilty - trouble is with this is that i share other posters concern here that we can score enough goals
I know on this site its deemed illegal to critcise VDV (one poster says i dont deserve to go to WHL ) however VDV does pose as many problems as he creates - on the plus side are his goals, assists and experience whereas on the negative side are the defensive problems and the effect on other players
If VDV could be disciplined in his approach to where he plays on the pitch then he is a massive asset but when he ignores his duties and just plays in a 'free spirited way' it causes issues for the team
His 'fitness' issues i think are mostly caused by the fact that he runs around like a nutter chasing the ball and konks out after an hour - i would love to see his yardage stats as i reckon he would achieve others average in an hour
Bottom line is to play him is to set up the team around him and that to me makes it very difficult to get the best out of Modric
And for you stats guys - since when was passes a measure the quality of attacking players? Maybe Defoe should drop deep, ignore his strike duties and get involved ina few pretty triangles on the half way line - his pass stats would be much better so he would obviously be a much better player wouldnt he? I assume Owen and Lineker were crap as well
