Looked like he didnt want to be there on sunday played as if he was disinterested, didnt even make an attempt to get the ball at times. Seems like a sulk cos his moved was blocked.

So we had a bid accepted by Deportivo, got permission to talk to the player and said we couldnt gurantee him first team football ? Any idea why this wasnt all over SSN or Setanta when the mere hint of a Newcastle bid was, with the full transfer reported on from start to finish publically ?

his agent was over here and spoke with 3 clubs including us.... talks were informal but once we said that we couldnt guarantee his client first team football, we were soon discarded. Stupidity personified!

More like.....We spent £8m on Woodgate to partner King because he's an experienced centre back with Premier League experience....So the thought of spending £10m on a centre back as backup for King and Woodgate, in his late 20's and with no Premier League experience, and who played for an average Spanish club, was not a good idea...If we're going to spend £10m on a centre back then it'll be someone young like Corluka.

Citeh's cashflow problems are clearly extreme. From today's Guardian:

------------------------

City's problems were compounded yesterday when it emerged they were the subject of a possible Fifa inquiry into claims that they had failed to pay some of the money they allegedly owe in the £8m signing of the Brazilian international midfielder Elano Blumer from Shakhtar Donetsk.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2008/aug/20/arsenal.manchesterunited

-----------------------------

Their board appear to be between a rock and a hard place. Certain Citeh board members are desperate to get some cash into the club, and our deal for Corluka was the best way of achieving that. However, Hughes appears to have issued an ultimatum: "sell Corluka (or anybody else I don't approve of selling) and I resign".

My understanding of the legal position is that if a club fails to pay transfer instalments, the original selling club can claim the player back. I stand ready for correction on this. But that means Elano, for instance, could end back at Shakhtar.

If that's correct, City have to start meeting transfer instalments or selling the relevant players before those instalments are due: otherwise, they'll be bankrupt very soon.

However, all this does lend credence to the rumours that Spurs had offered to meet the outstanding transfer payments to Corluka's original club, Dinamo Zagreb, as part of a revised offer for him.

Elano is one of a large number of Citeh players (acquired during Sven's spending spree) for whom transfer instalments must be coming due. They may very shortly have to accept our offer for Corluka, and find out if Hughes is bluffing or not.

Well look on the bright side... at least you woke up!

I think this one may drag on to January at this rate. City will probably bundle their way through until then, hoping either for a new buyer or for some other miracle.

Maybe even see how results go and if not great, then sell players come January regardless of Hughes's stance as they could use it as an excuse to get rid of him too.

Simply put, City are in trouble and are going to end up with egg on their face unless a miracle happens.

ah the King card..... ok if King and Woodgate play 30 times together as a partnership then i take your point on board... if however they dont then palming off someone like Coloccini, in hindsight, will be a mistake.... didnt we once spend £8m on the young Younes Kaboul....

Yes but then we got a new manager who didn't rate him highly and then spent similar money on Woodgate and sold Kaboul. And i understand the situation with King but i very much doubt we will be spending that sort of money on a centre back in their late 20s when, lets face it, if King is fit then he'll start alongside Woodgate more often than not. So its a lot more likely that we would spend that sort of money on a young centre back instead.

The only players who were experienced that we were linked with strongly were more like £3m-£5m and those were Diaz, Dunne and Meira. The only expensive centre backs we've been linked with strongly were in their early 20s like Jarque and Corluka. I think thats ultimately why we didn't sign Cuellar or Collocini. Even Kaboul himself is very young so it was a good investment. We needed 1 first team centre back and we signed him in january, and he has plenty of Premier League experience. We do need a good backup centre back though and if Collocini and Cuellar were £5m then either would have been perfect.

That's standard policy, from us and most big clubs. We wont offer that condition to anyone and tend to withdraw from talks the second it is proposed because we don't want any players like that around. Clubs like Newcastle and West Ham are welcome to such pathetic and unambitious players.

If he did insist on that being in his contract then he is a dodged bullet.

he didnt insist it, we stated it.......
we need 4 good CB's.... at the moment we have Woodgate, King and Dawson.... Woodgate is good.... Daws can at times be good....... King when fit is good....... therefore we need another good CB.... Coloccini is a good CB as he proved on Sunday

The following is off the topic of Corluka but responding to Dan's comments about clauses guaranteeing first team football.

Just to note that there are rumours that Zokora has a clause guaranteeing him first team football at Spurs - if fit. Like Dan, I'd be surprized if these rumours were true.

Secondly, I wonder how such a clause could be enforced. If Keegan drops Coloccini, can he claim breach of contract and leave? Or damages? Hmmm.

Thirdly, Coloccini is a leader and a good player. However, I've seen him make lots of mistakes for Deportivo etc, and I'm not convinced he's a good enough player to help take us to the next level.

For c£10 million, I would hope we could get a better player: such as Vedran Corluka! (Back on topic.)

I'll be really suprised if this one happens now. The media have gone quiet on it as well.
